TOTAL INSTALLED U.S. WIND ENERGY CAPACITY: 12,634 MW as of June 30, 2007

http://www.awea.org/projects/

http://www.awea.org/faq/instcap.html {installed capacity 1981-2007} After 2000 the installations just explode! (Tax Credit for installation of wind farms approved for MORE THAN ONE year!)

Jpak probably already posted this but for those who were out surfing, it bears repeating.

We have a long way to go but the slope on that graph is awe-inspiring.

1. And STILL Virginia can't get
on the installed wind map... A developer has been trying for years now to get a pisant 39 MW project in the ground. Approval from the Board of Supervisors, tentative approval from our PUC - and now the opponents have filed two separate cases in the VA Supreme Court to try and block it. Oy... Guess folks here prefer to see the tops blasted off mountains like our neighbors to the west..

2. Wind power is the ultimate NIMBY energy source.
People like the idea, but want NOTHING to do with it if they can see it. Western NY has been shouting down wind farms for years.

3. Looks like they are going to be doubling the capacity in NY in the next few years.

As natural gas and coal keep going up wind will become more and more the compelling choice.

8. Yea, wind turbines suffer almost as much NIMBY as nuclear reactors.
You have to love public ignorance.

5. I know that we have a few in Jefferson, St Lawrence, and surrounding counties
here in NY, and locals are split almost 50/50 on them.

For is saying that the units will cut greenhouse gasses and other emissions, use of fossil fuels

Against is saying that windmills kill wildlife with the blades, are an eyesore, not a dependable and consistant source of energy due to changing weather patterns.

6. Not bad.

Counting the capacity factor that's the generation equivalent of what, 4 or 5 coal or nuclear plants?

Since 2001 they've added 8000 MW of capacity - maybe 2500 MW of actual generation. That's the equivalent of three coal plants. In just 6 years. And the Chinese are putting in that many coal plants every damn week.

Wow.

I'm impressed.

Or not.
