The incident was reported to the Emery County Sheriff's Office at 3:50 a.m./0950 GMT, said Sgt. Bliss Mead, a spokesman. Emergency crews arrived at the scene at about 4:00 a.m./1000 GMT, the mayor of nearby Huntington, Utah, told Fox News.
The Genwal mine is about 120 miles south of Salt Lake City in a remote part of the western U.S. state known for mining. It is operated by Utah American Energy, Wilson said.

In January 2006, 12 miners were killed in an explosion at International Coal Group's Sago mine in West Virginia. In response, Congress passed the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act, which President George W. Bush signed into law last year.
