Sun Micro to Roll Out Major Java Software Advances
By REUTERS Published: June 28, 2004 Filed at 10:07 a.m. ET

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Sun Microsystems Inc. will roll out major enhancements to its developer tools for the Java programming language and will contribute next-generation computing desktop technologies to the open-source community, the computer maker said on Sunday.<snip>

Sun is also pushing hard with its desktop strategy, having signed recent deals with the Chinese government and others to distribute millions of copies of its Linux-based Java Desktop System, which is an alternative to Microsoft Corp.'s Windows operating system. Contributing technology from Project Looking Glass and Java 3D are part of that effort, Sun said.<snip>

On Monday, Van Den Hoogen said Sun will announce Java 2 Standard Edition 5.0, which carries enhancements to speed of development, debugging of software and increased programmer productivity, and will be available by the end of the year. It also adds better graphics for software developers, Sun said.

Sun will also announce the widespread availability of its Sun Java Studio Creator programming tool. It is analogous to Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT.O) Visual Studio and Visual basic software programming tools. Both aim to make it easier to write new software programs.

Sun also said it will contribute its Project Looking Glass and Java 3D technology to the open-source software community...<snip>

Sun Moving to Underscore New Strategy
By JOHN MARKOFF

Published: June 28, 2004

AN FRANCISCO, June 25 - Sun Microsystems will open its JavaOne software conference here on Monday by announcing several partnerships intended to strengthen the company's position in the rapidly growing mobile Internet business. This year's event will also underscore Sun's shift to a lower-cost, industry standard chip strategy (Advanced Micro Device's 64-bit Opteron microprocessor) for corporate server markets.

Sun's Java language competes with Microsoft's Visual Studio as systems that programmers use to design software. At this year's event, which will be held through Thursday, Sun will introduce a new software system, called Java Creator, that is intended to simplify the task of writing software applications.<snip>

Sun's effort in the standard server world is expected to pick up steam later this year when it introduces the first A.M.D.-based products designed by Andreas Bechtolsheim, a co-founder of the company. Mr. Bechtolsheim returned to Sun earlier this year when the computer maker acquired his start-up company, Kealia Inc.<snip>

Sun is expected to announce on Monday that it is contributing a portion of its Java Desktop System, the company's version of the Linux operating system, to the open-source community. The software technology, called Project Looking Glass and Java 3d, makes it possible to develop images that have more depth than conventional images on computer displays.<snip>

One Small Step in Uphill Fight as Linux Adds a Media Player
By STEVE LOHR Published: June 28, 2004

NU Linux, the free computer operating system, has had far more success in winning converts in corporate data centers than on desktop personal computers. But as more user-friendly software makes its way onto the Linux desktop, the free operating system is starting to make progress in its David-vs.-Goliath competition against Microsoft, the dominant power in PC software.

Another step in the progress of Linux in personal computers will come today, when two large Linux distributors, Red Hat and Novell, are expected to announce that they will ship the media-playing software of RealNetworks in their Linux desktop products.<snip>

RealNetworks had previously reached distribution agreements with TurboLinux, which is strong in Asian markets, and Sun Microsystems, whose Java desktop software runs on Linux.<snip>

Though Linux on the desktop is making gains, it has a long, long way to go to challenge Microsoft, which has built its PC stronghold over more than two decades. By the end of the year, Linux will be running on 1 percent of the desktop PC's worldwide, compared with 2.8 percent for Apple's Macintosh, and 96 percent for Microsoft's Windows, according to Gartner Inc., a research firm. Linux does far better overseas than in the United States, and most analysts expect that Linux is on track to overtake Macintosh over the next several years.<snip>
