If you decide to hoard gold, find an armored mattress
From page one story of the WSJ:

Fleets of armored trucks piled with gold bars and coins have been streaming out of midtown Manhattan in one unexpected consequence of the gold craze. Amid gold's rise -- it has gained 32% this year and reached a record on Monday -- investors have been loading up on bullion and coins. One big problem now is where to store it. The solution from HSBC, owner of one of the biggest vaults in the U.S.: somewhere else.

HSBC has told retail clients to remove their small holdings from its fortress beneath its tower on New York City's Fifth Avenue. The bank has decided retail customers aren't profitable enough and is demanding those clients remove their gold to make room for more lucrative institutional customers.

HSBC's decision has created a logistical nightmare for both the investors and the security teams in charge of relocating the gold, silver and platinum to new vaults across the country. Many of those vaults are also feeling pressure from the surge in demand for space from clients that have stocked up on metal.

The movement of gold from HSBC has created a stir not only among the bank's clients, but also among owners of warehouses and vaults around the country.

1. Remember the old "NO RADIO" signs people stuck on their dashboards
in the big cities back in the 80s?

I feel like posting "NO GOLD" signs on all points of entry into my house so thieves don't bother.

What little I have is hidden in such cockamamie places that thieves would have to practically dismantle the house to find it since I don't wear it.

2. Make sure it's not the freezer. It's the first place that people think of putting
their valuables in and the first place burglars going looking.

11. Misdirection is the name of the game
Besides, I've often suggested burying one's gold under the koi pond to keep it safe from thieves.

I have a koi pond and am looking forward to the prospect of watching thieves try to tunnel under it in the middle of the night.

Even if they find what little I have, it's not enough to compensate them for the work of getting to it, wherever it is.

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.

Precious metals tend to get a bit cumbersome over time.

4. Get a floor safe if you want to store your gold at home and your jewelry too.

Dig a hole in any room you have a concrete floor in like the garage and cement the safe into it. Burglars usually like to take the whole safe so they can figure out how to get into it at leisure. A double combination lock and key lock makes it harder for them to get into it in a timely fashion, so they will leave. Time is of the essence for them so as not to get caught. Then pull a mat over it and even a piece of furniture or equipment. My husband and I had a business at one time and got burglarized regularly. The floor safe became our solution for storing our money until we could get to the bank. Also, getting an alarm system doesn't hurt.

10. I should have that problem. Imagine ! A vault to store my gold.
Let me go check my hoard of gold. Two wedding rings, an old bracelet and two chains....the rest has got to be here somewhere. Now where did I put the ingots? I'll just keep looking, it will turn up, I'm sure.
