The US Tax code has never been "reformed" other than to mostly add more breaks to the rich.
So my Dad made the equivalent of a 55K salary back in the 1950's. But that salary was only $ 5.5 K.
We lived in lovely apartment, and at any point in time could have bought a nice home.
We had health insurance, two or three week vacation every year, new car every four to five years paid for in CASH. Also my mom blew money like no tomorrow - if she bought a dress, it had to have matching heels, belt, et cetera.
But now to have that kind of lifestyle, you'd need 55K and while the tax on 5.5 K was negligible, the tax on 55K is horrendous.
Also most of the middle incomed along both coasts and in major metro areas have lost the ability to ever own their own home, so the idea of home ownership with the resultant mortgage deduction is not possible. So the taxes on the middle incomed are really taking a much more horrible bite out of people paychecks, and that is before you examine another factor - my dad paid as an indie contractor no more than 6% -- now you'd be paying 15% !!
