Whole Foods Falls as Full-Year Profit Forecast Trails Estimates

Nov. 4 (Bloomberg) -- Whole Foods Markets Inc. fell 8.6 percent after saying it expects to earn less this year than some analysts expect.

Diluted profit may total $1.05 a share to $1.10 a share in 2010, the Austin, Texas-based company said today in a statement. Analysts expected $1.11, the average of 15 estimates in a Bloomberg survey.

Whole Foods anticipates no “positive change in the economy over the short term,” Chief Executive Officer John Mackey told analysts today on a conference call.

The shares sank $2.65 to $29.39 in trading after the close of Nasdaq Stock Market trading. The stock has more than tripled this year.

The company projects sales results this year to be in line with or slightly better than sales so far in the first quarter, Mackey said. Total revenue was 5 percent higher in the first five weeks of the period and comparable-store sales were up 1.6 percent, he said.

4. I'm sure this has nothing to do with what their CEO said earlier this year.

I sure haven't shopped there as much since this bozo opened his mouth.

5. Thanks to us stopping shopping there
Question: if a decent Health Care bill passes, can we return once in a while ... you know, just for the meats and bulk herbs and spices? (I'm getting a little desperate at times.)

7. Look for a Sprouts in your area.

When I lived in Austin, I preferred Central Market or Sun Harvest to WF anyway. I sure as heck don't want to shop there after Mackey showed his hand. Now I shop at Sprouts in my new area.

6. I used to shop there at least once a week. No no more.
I like Trader Joes better anyway and it's much more affordable. Haven't been to WF in months.

8. Whole foods ought to assess their pricing policies.
We have several large grocery stores in our area. A huge number of products are available in all 4 stores. WF is consistently higher than the others. In some cases, the difference is ridiculous.

They do offer some things that are not available in other stores but not enough to attract many shoppers who are savvy enough and for whom the price difference is of vital importance.

I'd shop there if they were on par with the competition. They are not so my business goes elsewhere.

It is difficult to shop smart but the pricing situation with WF is easy to avoid.
