Same-Sex Marriage and Time
Same-Sex Marriage and Time
http://baselinescenario.com/2009/11/04/same-sex-marriage-and-time/">Baseline Scenario

Yesterday Maine voted to restrict marriage to opposite-sex couples. It’s a sad day for people who believe that all couples who love each other should be allowed to marry, full stop.

But the chart below may cushion the blow a tiny bit. It’s from a paper by Jeffrey Lax and Justin Phillips, http://www.columbia.edu/~jrl2124/Lax_Phillips_Gay_Policy_Responsiveness_2009.pdf">“Gay Rights in the States: Public Opinion and Policy Responsiveness,” recently published in the American Political Science Review (via http://www.themonkeycage.org/2009/06/gay_marriage_a_tipping_point.html">The Monkey Cage). What you are seeing is support for same-sex marriage in 1994-96, 2003-04, and 2008-09; solid dots indicate that same-sex marriage is equal, hollow dots that it is not.

1. This is an encouraging graph. . .
however, I'm not sure why it's posted in "Economy", instead of GLBT. I'll put my thinking cap on and try to come up with an answer.

3. It's from an economics blog.
I thought of posting it in GD, but since it's analytical, I figured it would mostly appeal to my fellow nerds in the economy forum.

4. Something's not quite right with that concept as an absolute.
A majority of the electorate would NEVER have allowed inter-racial marriage. It took the Court to drag the bigoted masses kicking and screaming into the future.

5. That's a double standard
The Courts have never had any business making law, period. I agree, some good has come of some of the decisions, but they have no business making law. They are not elected in the case of the US Supreme Court. That's a fallacy of our present system. They interpret the law

6. Oops
We bitched with the edits coming from the Bush White House and that was wrong. I personally won't vote for that, but pick up the pieces and campaign some more. One day that sort of thing maybe accepted. Edits by anyone is tyranny. This is a democracy, whether it started as a rich man's republic is now immaterial. It's a democracy now and headed even toward that direction.
