Sampling Mexican Freedom
"Last night I was so inspired by all the talk about soda with real sugar, I had to get one. My band practices in a Mexican part of Oakland, rich in taco trucks and Mexican Coca-Cola. Our neighbor down south doesn't have our corn-syrup subsidies and sugar tariffs, so the Mexican version is as close to the Real Thing as you'll get in this country.

It was delicious. Then I had a good-ol' American Coke today. Yuck. Ick. Gringo protectionism makes me sick.

By the way, I got lots of great email about how to find good, real soda. I'm fortunate enough to live a block and a half from a store with lots of selection, but I hear the stuff is everywhere and, if you look around, not that expensive either. Specifically, look for Boylan's Soda of New Jersey, Jones's and Big Sky. And a forthcoming Pepsi variety will have sugar, which might turn me into a Pepsi-drinker for the first time in my life."

1. Boylan's Birch Beer is amazing
I see it sometimes up here in Ontario. Like root beer, but better -- richer, bolder flavour. Yum.
