Government Intercepts Stimulus Checks
The government is confiscating $2 billion worth of economic stimulus checks to pay for back taxes, defaulted student loans, and overdue child support, according to a report in USA Today.

As checks make their way through Treasury Department computers, the computers register which individuals owe money to the federal or state governments.

Thus far, 1.8 million rebate checks have been seized, for a total of $1 billion.

Those who stand to benefit the most are parents who are owed child support, according to USA Today. The intercepted funds are being sent directly to the family or agency to which it they are owed.

2. Congratulations to all the parents (mostly moms) who are getting owed child support.
There are thousands and thousands who need every dime and deserve every dollar they get. It's great if the money is going directly to the family or agency.

3. I haven't gotten mine yet
I hope they didn't seize it for some bogus reason. No kids, paid a bundle in april and no student loans.

5. you can check to see when you should get it at irs.gov
they have a couple of charts depending on whether you received a refund on your 2007 taxes by direct deposit or not, what your SS number is, and how late you filed.

I'm self-employed and paid taxes rather than receiving a refund, and I paid by check (thus they didn't have a link directly to a bank account in which to do a direct deposit). With my SS number, the rebate is supposed to be mailed around 7/4. But I also paid right on April 15th, so it's possible it could be later than that.

6. I checked the website and tried to call them
The website said they couldn't find my info(check was supposed to be sent 6/9), and when I called, they said they wouldn't speak to anyone until their check is 8 weeks late or more.

Blah.

4. The Feds just pulled off a huge "sting"
You know, like those reality shows where the cops call people with warrants
and con them into coming down to pick up a "prize"....??

Same thing...getting folks to send in tax forms for promised money.
Lottsa people did not owe taxes, but sent the forms in anyhow to get the
"stimulus" check.
The Feds had their database ready to match names against debts
Bush gets credit for giving away money that was not given away,
the "bad" guys who owed debt got caught and ..well, debit-ed.
And the Government does not have to pay out about half of the much touted '"stimulus"...
Color me impressed.
