Adjusted for inflation, the top one percent of California taxpayers saw their average adjusted gross income jump 22.6 percent between 2003 and 2004. Corporations reporting income for state tax purposes saw income rise more than fourfold between 2001 and 2004, the study found.

One reason for the slow wage growth has been the effects of globalization, which has ratcheted up competition between U.S. workers and others around the world. The decline in the number of unionized workers, who typically earn more than nonunion employees, has also been a factor, Ross said.
