There was Larry King Live, now there's The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. What's next? Comedy Central's news parody program The Daily Show? The tittering Republicans so enamored with Arnold Schwarzenegger undermine their own case that the crisis is dire by addressing it in such a light setting. Doesn't it occur to them that their candidate's announcement on a show of gags and jokes just buttresses Gray Davis's argument that the state is not in a solemn crisis justifying a recall? The superficiality of it all lends support to the Dems claim that the Republicans are engaged in a frivolous...

Arnold Schwarzenegger has been dubbed 'Conan the Contender' in California's gubernatorial recall electionBuilding Arnold Body sculpting. Real estate. Movies. Politics. It really doesn’t matter what the terrain: Arnold’s fierce will to win has propelled him to the top. How he does it. By Jerry Adler, Karen Breslau and Jennifer Ordonez NEWSWEEK Aug. 18 issue — From the moment he set foot here in 1968, Arnold Schwarzenegger understood that there is no higher tribute in American public life than “self-made man,” and he pursued it with a determination that suggests he first encountered the phrase in a too-literal German translation. I watched Arnold S. on TV...He was visiting troops in Iraq. He stated that US soldiers are true "terminators". Arnold also remarked that the bad conditions he encountered in Iraq reminded him of chaos in CA... It was nice of Arnold to visit the troops...He could be spending time in Asia or Europe to promote his T3 film...Asia and Europe are important markets...I don't think that the studio considers Iraq to be an important market for the T3 film... It might have been even better if Arnold visited the troops with a female star...But, who? Jennifer Lopez?

Thursday, August 7, 2003 A Question About Arnold 07:06 PM Here's a question that I'd like to hear put to prominent Republicans who are backing Arnold S. for governor. This is not intended as a "gotcha" question or an attempt to provoke a slap-fight or anything. I promise you, I'm genuinely interested in hearing a civil, honest answer to this... We have here a candidate who describes himself as "very liberal" on social issues. He favors gay adoption and certain other gay rights. He favors legalized abortion and some forms of gun control. He opposed the impeachment of Bill Clinton...

Arnold Schwarzenegger is out promoting his new movie, "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines." He is attacking his publicity regimen -- Leno, Howard Stern, "Good Morning America" -- with customary discipline. He is not interested in discussing whether he'll run for governor of California. "Arnold is staying on message, and the message is T-3," says George Gorton, a Republican consultant who is advising Schwarzenegger on matters that are, right now, not on message. But politics is following Arnold everywhere. There are "Arnold for Governor" signs outside the "T-3" premiere, at which Arnold toothy-grins from the red carpet. A few nights...

DON'T EXPECT Arnold Schwarzenegger to stroll into California's governor's mansion. Why? He is too much of a celebrity, and has too much charisma. Despite what you've been told, Californians no longer want charismatic celebrities as their governor. At least they haven't for the past six gubernatorial elections spanning two decades. They've consistently rejected flamboyance in favor of grayness. They've opted for managers instead of visionaries. I've lived in California for most of the past 30 years, under the rule of its past five governors, beginning with Ronald Reagan. Since Jerry Brown left the statehouse in 1982, it's always puzzled...

Democrat Davis has poll ratings as dismal as Mayor Bloomberg's - just 21 percent positive in the last likely-voter survey - and alas for him, California lets voters kick out unpopular politicians in a recall. Schwarzenegger has always had self-confidence. In his 1977 autobiography, Arnold: The Education of a Bodybuilder, he wrote: "I knew I was a winner. I knew I was destined for great things." Having settled in Los Angeles, he wasn't content to be "just" a world champion bodybuilder; he immediately set out to be a world champion capitalist as well. While Weider paid him $60 a week (in addition to providing him an apartment and car) to write articles for his bodybuilding magazine, Schwarzenegger started a bricklaying and masonry business with his weightlifting friend Columbu, who'd been his training partner in Germany...

I had been leaning towards McClintock, and I must admit, I made that decision before Arnold threw his hat into the ring. I welcomed the move when he did, but I still had reservations. I had gotten pretty excited over McClintock's vision, particularly his desire to void the Davis energy contracts and his general desire to stick it to the Democrats. George Gorton, campaign consultant for Arnold Schwarzenegger, says of the recall, "This election will be about leadership, not issues." California must hope he's dead wrong. Leadership in politics can't be separated from where the leader wants to go. A governor isn't a general, who can order his troops to march west by day, then east by night. He or she can't issue orders and command assent or obedience. A governor defines a vision and values, identifies challenges and persuades the public to come along. It's precisely by the route of bleeding the content from gubernatorial elections that California arrived at...

August 11, 2003 -- Governator wannabe Arnold Schwarzenegger is worth his weight in California gold - earning a whopping $57 million in two years, his latest tax returns show. The muscle-bound mogul raked in more than $31 million in 2000, then pumped up his earnings with another $26 million the next year, according to the just-released records. But not all of that dough filled the former body-builder's personal coffers. Schwarzenegger paid more than $15.4 million in federal taxes for both years. He also paid $4.6 million in California state taxes. Even New York got a piece of the action star's...

---------------------------------------- Arnold goes where candidates fear to tread Carla Marinucci Wednesday, June 25, 2003 ---------------------------------------- Arnold Schwarzenegger chatted on the air with shock jock Howard Stern Tuesday about nude scenes, his political ambitions, physical equipment and whether he wanted to have sex with his movie co-star. In the process, he illustrated why juggling entertainment and politics might be tougher than saving the world in "Terminator 3." Schwarzenegger, a likely GOP candidate for governor if the effort to recall Gray Davis goes forward, called Stern a "good friend" -- but he's also a controversial radio personality best known for racy features...

Fox News
Last nite I happened to catch a clip on Fox of Arnold Schwarzenegger at a special screening Terminator 3 for US Marines. The sound bite of his address to the crowd was something like: "Bush should see Terminator 3 because it's the only place he'll find weapons of mass destruction." Haven't seen it noted hear, so I thought I would post this just for the record. If anyone has the exact quote, by all means please post it here.

I don't know if Arnold Schwarzenegger will run for governor. But I do know this: Our standard-order politicians are dreaming if they think they are going to blow him away. I'm not surprised that the general public sees Schwarzenegger, so far, as little more than a Hollywood celebrity. But the political class should know better. This is a man of substance with accomplishments in charity and business that would make him a very formidable candidate for the state's highest office, even if his lack of political experience makes it difficult to guess what kind of governor he would ultimately be....

Arnold Schwarzenegger An exclusive interview with the manliest man about his plan to help California's youth. By Joe de Wolk, Youth Radio ... YR: Some critics argue that in your movies, there's a lot of violence and killing...you smoke cigars. So how can you be a role model for kids with this kind of example? AS: That's a good question. But that question, you cannot ask me. Because I don't pick myself as the role model. You can't pick yourself. You can't say, this is what I want to do: I want to smoke stogies and do things to be...

1. Arnold
I have a feeling that Arnold is not the actual candidate. There are more than 100 other names on the ballot, and I'm sure that when the media gets done with it's Arnold coverage, someone else will emerge at the last minute, before there is any time to jump on him. I would keep an eye on that crook, Bill Simon.
