I think I can finally cancel my subscription to The New Republic

I've been a subcriber since just before the 2000 election, and until recently, I've always felt the editorial bent of the magazine has fit nicely with my personal take on the issues. They've also done a good job of keeping me on top of things.
For example, the first I read of Howard Dean was in the pages of TNR.

I was a little surprised when the magazine came out in favor of the Iraq War, but I had trusted their judgement in the past, so I decided to see how it played out before judging them too much. Now, with the post-war situation becoming the debacle that many predicted. The magazine is in the embarassing situation of trying to justify their previous stance. Their position that it was the right thing to do, but with the wrong people in charge just doesn't fly with me.

The final straw was Martin Peretz's piece in their latest issue in which he writes as if the post-Iraq strategy is going EVEN BETTER than expected. I thought for a moment that I had accidentally been sent the latest copy of the Weekly Standard. :grr:

I'm tired of hearing these writers try to justify Bush's radical shift in foreign policy.

Not to mention their coverage of the Democratic candidates. Initially I thought they actually supported Howard Dean, yet recently they seem to be overly willing to heap praise on the likes of Joe Lieberman. For the month of July, Lieberman has the highest score of any candidate, yet Dean had the lowest.

I think The Nation may have just found a new subscriber.

is much, much better. I stopped reading TNR when Andrew Sullivan revealed what a conservative, self hating apologist he is. I can't watch other gay men be the lap dogs of our oppressors.

I never understood why Andrew Sullivan was given a place there. Do conservative magazines let liberal writers have a weekly column?

Before the 2000 election debacle, including Mother Jones, and was really disheartened to see how these liberal mags ragged on Gore and just let Bush and other Repukes get by with just about anything. I cancelled them all.

I let my Nation and The Progressive subscriptions go cause I was and still am pissed at them for saying that Gore was no better than Bush. Both of those rags lost me over their support for Nader.

3. TNR...

is a DLC mouth piece. The Nation and The American Prospect are far more progressive and respectible than TNR!!!
Andrew Sullivan writes for them, is that telling you something???

7. The sad thing is...

I used to identify myself with the DLC. It seems as the Republicans move further to the right,the DLC feels the Democrats must move with them instead of holding the moderate line that they originally started out with.

The New Republic reflects this change quite well.

ago! I think you would like "The Nation"..they are definetly against this bogus attack on Iraq. Plus they have many intelligent thoughtful writers and they need help getting the message out.

The new republic has an agenda and it ain't my agenda.

You have to ignore certain writers for TNR. Once you concede to the fact that Paretz is kinda nuts and stop reading once you get to his name in the byline the rest of the magazine isn't too bad. I don't think anyone really takes him that seriously. Then appreciate the real authors like Ryan Lizza and Kaufman.

11. The American Prospect

is probably my favorite magaize of U.S. politics. If I remember correctly, I found it to be fair to both sides during the 2000 Nader/Gore conflict (just so you know my biases: I was a Nader supporter then; now I'm voting Dem no matter what), and it provides good coverage of both the substance of the issues as well as horse-race politics. Kind of a middle way between TNR and the Nation. Robert Reich is one of the founding editors and has a column, if that gives you an idea of its alignment.
