Editor:

Your March 19, 2004 editorial "Iraq, after a year" stenographically repeats the Administration's latest revisionist story, and attempts to mislead your readers on several points.

You state, "Opponents of the war want the United States to leave Iraq." Maybe some do, but the majority of us realize that the United States has created a situation that demands a great deal of corrective effort on the part of our country. We also need to renew our commitment to the people of Afghanistan, whom we have largely abandoned during our Iraqi vacation from the war on terrorism.

You claim that "much of what the administration cited before the war...was true." This is mind-bending. The case for war was made on false claims of WMD possession, the infamous Niger nuclear forgery, and false tie between Al Qaeda and Saddam. No WMDs have been found in Iraq, Iraq did not in any way pose an immediate threat to the country. More than 570 US Soldiers have been killed. They and the country were rushed into war on the basis of untruths.

The Oregonian does not fulfill its obligations by parroting the deceptions of the Administration. Please try to do a little better job.

I could reframe it for another local weekly, slamming the Oregonian or something, but would probably just wait for the next offense of misrepresentation from somebody and try again.

The newspapers have not lived up to the obligations of the press in a free society. We have to make them do their jobs.
