What is the most left-leaning mainstream newspaper?
Yes, I know that none really lean that way, and that everything is pretty much center-right, so which is the least center-right? I can think of a few candidates:

LA Times
SF Gate
Boston Globe
NY Daily News

2. What's their readership?
I am trying to determine which large-market paper is the most - I think that despite the Internet people still get their news from papers (TV not included).

15. Cap Times or Wisc State Journal?
I used to live in Madison, and the Cap Times was always reliably liberal, but the Wisconsin State Urinal was just plain stupid.

I would say that most of your alt-weeklies are pretty liberal. The Globe is pretty progressive, if you ignore the hatchet job they did on Kerry last year.

8. Some think AVA...
Anderson Valley Advertiser...small town paper in Boonville

some great stories and contributors...

I will always 'click'/read bylines from The Gate, Mercury News, The TO Star,Independent, Guardian, Village Voice (does a weekly count?),le monde diplomatique, der Speigel, Baltimore Sun, ...

I don't really go by 'left' wing/'right' wing...if well read and well-researched and have integrity...then I will read them.

13. Good Grief....is that still publishing?
Bruce Anderson takes no prisoners. Probably the last of the great personal journalists.

16. "Der Spiegel" isn't that left leaning
It is more that it isn't right leaning either. (rare in the German media)
For left-leaning German newspapers: the "Taz" (The German Guardian).
The Frankfurter Rundschau and the Süddeutsche Zeitung aren't RW either.

9. Washington Post tries to be fair most of the time.
My Neanderthal BIL thinks it is a "liberal rag" so they must be doing something right.

10. Not as much anymore
It's pretty mushy middle now, and lets some of it's reporters repeat RW taliing points without question. Still, it's light years beyond the Moonie Times! and it covers international news ok.

(The Post has the best comics page in the US though, 3 pages!)

11. Albany, NY TimesUnion
and BTW, by including the Daily News in your list, shows just how bad things are for the progressive community. I used to live in downstate NY, and the Daily News is anything but left leaning.

14. Sacramento Bee & Louisville Times/Courier Journal USED to be
Not too sure about the 'Bee nowadays, and the C-J/Times was pretty liberal 20 years ago when it was still owned by the Binghams.
