Chris Matthews obsession with Obama's ability to "walk into a dinette" continues
Media Matters for America: Fri, Apr 25, 2008
Matthews' obsession with Obama's ability to "walk into a dinette (sic)" continues

On the April 24 edition of MSNBC's Hardball, referring to Sen. Barack Obama, host Chris Matthews said to NBC News political director Chuck Todd, "Chuck, let's talk about race. Let's mix in with class. I've said before -- people have criticized me for this -- he doesn't seem to have the knack for walking into a dinette (sic) with regular people in it and just having fun, just connecting."

The week before, Matthews similarly asserted that Obama has "got another problem. ... He can't walk into a dinette (sic) with five or six guys there, white guys, in some cases. He can't just shake hands and hang out. He doesn't seem to, 'Hey, you know, how are the Eagles doing?' Or 'How are the Phils doing?'" In addition, on the April 10 edition of Hardball, Matthews claimed that Obama is "not that good at that -- handshaking in a diner," adding: "Barack doesn't seem to know how to do that right." MSNBC correspondent David Shuster agreed, stating: "He doesn't do that well." Matthews then asserted: "What's so hard about doing a diner? I don't get it. Why doesn't he go in there and say, 'Did you see the papers today? What do you think about that team? How did we do last night?' Just some regular connection?" During that same segment, Matthews and Shuster also critiqued Obama's reported request for orange juice after being offered coffee at an Indiana diner.

Media Matters has documented numerous other examples of Matthews and other MSNBC personalities and guests purporting to identify actions by, or characteristics of, Obama that they have suggested demonstrate that he is not a "regular guy."...

1. Guess Obama will just have to don a flight suit with a giant cod-piece
to get Matthews all excited again.

Obama strikes me as a shy guy at heart...not the best at small talk but a friend who would kill for you once he lets you in.

Anyway, let's make it a RACIAL thing, Tweety.

11. In a word, yes! Media Matters recently did a long piece on that very issue --
contending that while this kind of thing seems trivial, it is part of the media's painting liberals/Democrats as effete, not "regular guys." Gore and Kerry were the prime examples.

10. Is he talking about the same Obama that
walked the gritty streets of Chicago as an organizer,
or the one that's known as a fairly good "street " ball player w/ the shit talking that goes w/ it( trash talking, in polite circles)
or the one that shows up on National TV to root for "Da Bears? "

Yes, he ( Matthews ) must be talking about the beer/bratwurst/bowling crowd of guys. The so called Reagan Republicans who are largely responsible for helping the neocons drive the Counrty into the ditch, in spite of the consequences to themselves and their families. Yes, I'm sure those are the ones he's referencing.

I say " fuck em " and will actively look for support among younger, smarter folks that care about their future and their Country.

12. But would you want to have a beer with Obama?
Because that is now the most important qualification for President, apparently.

15. And here's Chris Matthews on McCain's temper
"Well, please give me the list of great politicians who lack a great temper. I hear these stories about everybody in public life. They all got a temper. Seems to come with the territory."

This is what we have to deal with.

18. I guess didn't realize that Obama was running for pageant queen...
but I totally agree with Matthews. I mean, what kind of snob drinks orange juice (made from US grown products) instead of coffee (most likely from Columbia or other wonderful countries in South America)? Shame on you, Barack. Was this orange juice pulped or pulp free? Why do you not drink apple juice? Why do you hate apples, apple pie, and Don McClean? Why did you kill music and the Big Bopper? Huh? .... ok im done
