The Rebellion of the Talking Heads
The Rebellion of the Talking Heads
Newscasters, sick of official lies and stonewalling, finally start snarling.
By Jack Shafer
Posted Friday, Sept. 2, 2005, at 2:36 PM PT

former deputy chief of FEMA told Knight Ridder Newspapers yesterday (Sept. 1) that there "are two kinds of levees—the ones that breached and the ones that will be breached." A similar aphorism applies to broadcasters: They come in two varieties, the ones that have gone stark, raving mad on air and the ones who will.

In the last couple of days, many of the broadcasters reporting from the bowl-shaped toxic waste dump that was once the city of New Orleans have stopped playing the role of wind-swept wet men facing down a big storm to become public advocates for the poor, the displaced, the starving, the dying, and the dead.

1. The rebellion is over. Time to stop patting themselves on the back.

For SEVEN DAYS out of FIFTEEN YEARS they allow a little real news to leak into their "reporting".

Whoopie shit.

Now for the next year we're gonna have to suffer through article after article about how brave they were for that tiny window of time.

They all need to take their asses to a viewing of "Good Night and Good Luck" and wallow in shame.

2. That's good, but too late for those traitors
TV News hairdo's have betrayed democracy and are traitors to America. They should be tried when these criminals are ousted from their power usurpation.

4. I'm not sure we'd see a lot of difference between news now and 50 yrs ago.
It was all about controlling the masses.

My Depression/WWII era parents were convinced by the same media there was a "Cold War."

6. I don't think you can rewrite history quite that easily.
"Cold War": whatever you want to call it, it was real, and people died for it, people on all three sides went to prison for it, people's lives were turned upside down by it. 50,000+ Americans died for it in Vietnam, others in Korea. Reagan committed treason solling arms for hostages for it, people won Nobel prizes trying to stop it.

Whatever bizarre thesis you have, it will need some extended writing before it is understandable.

7. uh...that was my whole point
No bizarre thesis here. Just relaying the experiences of my parents (now elderly) who now question why so many lives had to be lost, and wonder if things may have gone differently if Americans had had access to truth, not spin.
