When I cancel my local rag -what should I subscribe to?
I have decided that my local daily clarion is not worth the effort to retrieve it from the driveway each morning. So, I wonder, is there some paper somewhere that actually tries to report real news to it's populace? (and NOT the NYT or the Washinton Post - I do read those on a regular basis) But I thought it would be nice to reward any paper that actually wrote or published hard news or good editorial with a mail subscription and prove that there is a place for this in the marketplace and that it's a niche that is dying to be filled. Suggestions?

1. You'll do better following the links at Buzzflash
to AP and Reuters for the bare bones news stories and the Buzzflash links to stories they've found interesting.

The city fishwraps brag about being locally owned, but they're a lot farther right that their letters to the editor are. Plus, they've got lousy comics, especially in the morning.

I consider my monthly ISP bill as substitution for newspapers, magazine subscriptions, cable or dish TV, and a whole lot of other entertainment and "news" venues. I do subscribe to The Nation and Harper's, though.

2. Good Luck!
Where abouts do you live? If there isn't a paper in your area worth subscribing to (and you already read the Times and the Post), maybe try the International Herald Tribune. And while it's a weekly magazine rather than a daily newspaper, The New Yorker has some excellent pieces you won't find anywhere else.

3. Not in your part of the country, I suggest an RSS reader...
...subscribed to Reuters newswire and some of the British Liberal News papers, like The Guardian or The Independent. One U.S. paper I like is Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

They have the best Political Cartoonist working today, in my opinion. Here's David Horsey's latest cartoon, that's on-line. Usually, they are more up to date, not sure why this one's so old.

4. the texas observer

Granted, most of its news is Texas-related, but as goes Texas, so goes the nation. I've known who Tom DeLay is for ages. They started all sorts of social de-struction there, like No Child Left Behind. And TO has some great reporters and Jim Hightower and Molly Ivins each week. I requested a free issue and then subscribed.

5. I'm really looking for a daily local newspaper
Thanks for the suggestions. I read tons of stuff online ,(my favorites are DU, Buzzflash and Daily Kos ), and I already suscribe to the New Yorker and Vanity Fair ( and borrow Mother Jones from a friend). I just thought it would be really cool if a local that truly made an effort to report the news that is being ignored was rewarded by people finding out about it and suscribing. Heck! I might even move there!

9. The Nation
It's weekly, and they are free of corporate influence. Great writing. Been going since the late 1800s. About 50 cents a week.
