It seems that it wants so much to be a national newspaper, that it slowly has abandoned the communities that it serves.
First, a few years ago, it abandoned the community issues in favor of one big "local" section.
Now it built nice webpages of its 'TCN' papers: Burbank Leader, Glendale News, Huntington Beach Independent, Newport Beach Daily Pilot and Laguna Beach Coastline Pilot.
But, it removed these papers from its search engine. If one is in the LAT page, and one enters a key word, if it appears in one of the TCN papers, it won't be recognized by the LAT search engine. This might not have been too bad had the TCN pages had their own search engines - but they don't.
Thus, either the LAT people do not recognize the importance of being able to search stories - hard to believe as it carries a paying archives going back to 1987 - or it decided to let community news dangled in the wind, letting the LA Daily News and the Long Beach Press Telegram and others to take the lead.
