Novak misquoted Dean to buttress Social Security crisis rhetoric

Syndicated columnist and CNN host Robert Novak misquoted Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean in order to suggest that Dean supports the Bush administration's message that Social Security is in crisis.
by Dean

From the February 26 edition of CNN's The Capital Gang:

NOVAK: The Democratic line that this isn't a problem -- Howard Dean gave a speech at Cornell on Thursday of this week in which he said that 80 percent -- over the years, 80 percent of the Social Security benefits will be lost. There is a problem. So, Howard sometimes tells the truth. He doesn't get the exact line.

In fact, Dean did not say "80 percent of the Social Security benefits will be lost," as Novak claimed, but rather that "if Social Security were left alone for 30 years, benefits would be reduced to 80 percent of what it is now," as The Cornell Daily Sun reported in its coverage of Dean's February 23 speech at the university. The article further noted that Dean "would not endorse" privatizing of Social Security, adding that "e acknowledged that while there were indeed problems with the program, turning to Wall Street was not the answer."<snip>

1. RNC joins Novak in lying about what Dean said.
RNC today uses Novak's 2nd misquote of Dean after it is debunked.

What the heck kind of country is this that the RNC puts lies on their front page after they have been debunked.
Novak misquoted Howard Dean for the 2nd time in two days. RNC uses his words today.
This is the 2nd write-up about this at Media Matters.

Here is the FIRST correction of Novak by Media Matters.

RNC website today misquotes Howard Dean, using words of Bob Novak. Media Matters has already debunked this.

CNN'S ROBERT NOVAK: "They've got to really get Howard under control. He spoke at Cornell University last week, and the only paper that covered this was "The Cornell Daily" student paper, and he said, yes, Social Security has a big problem. Over the years it's going to lose about 80 percent of the benefits. That, Judy, is not the Democratic line. The Democratic line is there is no problem."

What Howard Dean really said at Cornell, according to the Cornell Daily.

SNIP..."I think that privatizing Social Security has much more to do with the enormous amount of money that corporate Wall Street poured into the President of the United States's campaign than senior citizens," Dean said. " was a response toward abject poverty...it is not meant as a retirement program...it was meant as a social safety net for people who had reached the end of their working careers and did not deserve, after a long lifetime of dignified work, to live in poverty. ... It's not supposed to be a pension."

Dean pointed out that, while he would not endorse this, if Social Security were left alone for 30 years, its benefits would be reduced to 80 percent of what it is now. He acknowledged that while there were indeed problems with the program, turning to Wall Street was not the answer."

2. Today, Judy W. corrected Novaks statements
in a little blurb at the end of her broadcast. So I watched to see if Novak would also correct himself, and, of course, he did not.

I was not aware that this had happened until today, so it is new to me. As I considered how he had twisted the facts I felt that almost certainly it was not done by accident. Upon reading your post and seeing how the RNC is perpetuating this lie, am now quite certain it was not a mistake at all.

How outlandish! I am writing to CNN, and I hope Dr.Dean sues them!

3. Well, that's Novak's style.
He also overemphasized the fact that George Bush won John Edwards state of South Carolina so as to make Bush's victory seem like it was
by a greater major than it actually was.

Jon Stewart is right. Novak truly is a douschebag.

4. Actually Judy apologized for that today.
Said Novak simply "misquoted" the good Doctor.
