Can't believe it...my wife and I tuned into 1010AM to listen to Savage and we heard some blathering rant about section 108 housing being scrapped??? What's the deal? Quickly tuned into 1100 and I see they picked up Savage, but what a shock. Just wondering who else has noticed and what's the story? (550 and 960 = tried and true)

and they are mad in Rochester too.

We now have the Air America problem in Rochester NY as of a week ago. WROC replaced Laura, O'Reilly and Shaun with this lib crap. I dashed off a message to the station manager for answers and they do not return any messages or calls. I am now finding out the sponsors of the station and will send them boycott messages. Very unhappy with their poor decision.

For your reading enjoyment, search on FR for Air America...It's so good when these Freeps are freaking out about the AAR invading their cities.

2. LOL. . . replaced Laura, O'Reilly, Hannity, Savage, buahahahahaha
But that can't be. According to the freepers, there's no market for this type of radio.

BUAHAHAHAHAHA

4. I thought freepers were free market capitalists
If so, they should be HAPPY that AA is making the radio stations money, when their 'heroes' obviously aren't.....

5. Not sure why they're complaining in Rochester
Edited on Wed Sep-29-04 09:58 AM by RatTerrier
All of those shows are carried by a station in a neighboring city that supposedly gets into the Rochester market.

It is kinda cool that they dumped those guys for progressive talk, though. If I recall, Hannity, O'Really and Savage have been the most vocal of the anti-AAR crowd, constantly crowing about their pending demise.

BTW: One of the freepers got it wrong about the way AAR provides their programming. The person claims that AAR gives the shows away for free, no strings attached. Not so. They do a straight barter system, where the shows are essentially offered for free, but AAR reserves network time for airing their own ads. The remaining time can be sold by the local affiliates.

AAR's original plan was to either buy stations outright or lease the time. Those stations would air strictly AAR content. KPOJ in Portland was a bit different, where they actually allowed Clear Channel to do a typical syndication deal. CC juggled the schedule a bit and threw in another show, Ed Schultz. Ironically, KPOJ is AAR's biggest success story, and CC has obviously become very excited about the format. After that, AAR had the clout to go ahead as a straight syndicator, which meant that they could actually find stations to pick up their content, and they allowed stations to cherry-pick content (i.e. pick up Franken and the morning show, but not Unfiltered). Smart move, in that it gives local stations more flexibility, and allows them to pick up shows from other syndicators (Ed Schultz, Lionel, Stephanie Miller), thereby building a stronger station with a more powerful and individual lineup.

Most of the hosts they mentioned (Savage, Ingraham, Snow, Hewitt, etc.) do business the same exact way. And that's why so many AM stations pick up syndicated talk. It's outrageously cheap. After all, I just can't see a station paying to broadcast Laura Ingraham.

The next tier of radio talent, such as Rush and Howard Stern, charge for their shows. Of course, their demand and their upside (potential success) is very high. Howard works on a straight cash basis, and the affiliates get to sell virtually all the ad time. Rush is a barter/cash mix, but he charges a ton for his show. Bill O'Really supposedly works on a straight barter, but Westwood One actually paid stations in L.A. and N.Y., and perhaps a few other markets, to carry his show.

Just setting the record straight.

6. Exactly. They're criticizing AAR for distributing shows under
the same deal most talk radio shows are distributed under.

7. Here's a little about how it works
Here's two talk shows, one liberal (Thom Hartmann) and one conservative (G. Gordon Liddy).

Here's a typical syndication clock graphic, from http://www.thomhartmann.com/affiliates.shtml :

This 'clock' shows how it's all divvied up. Local time and network ad time.

Here's some affiliate info from Liddy:

http://www.liddyshow.us/affiliate.php?PHPSESSID=0e8fc1d9b7d873bca5e3b8e54be7c527

THE G. GORDON LIDDY SHOW AIRS LIVE
MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY
10:00am-2:00pm
on STARGUIDE CHANNEL 14
refeed 2-6pm

Host: G. Gordon Liddy

Length of Program: 4 hours

Air Time: 10AM-2PM ET, M-F, only the first three hours are repeated
(West coast stations air the fourth live hour and the three repeat hours for a broadcast from 10AM- 2PM PT).

Delivery Method: Satellite

Major stations: WWTN-FM Nashville, KCAA-AM Los Angeles, WALR-AM Atlanta, WTNT-AM Washington DC, WCBM-AM Baltimore, WTAR-AM Norfolk, WAPI-AM Birmingham

Show airs: Monday-Friday
Local Avails: 11 Minutes per hour
Network Avails: 4 minutes per hour

This is the way barter works. It's a mutual agreement, where a station gets content, and the syndicator/host gets another station to show to network advertisers (i.e. 'Hey, I cleared Birmingham! Buy time on my show!'). No money trades hands - just give the syndicator some time to sell to advertisers. Most syndicated radio shows work this way, whether it be O'Really, Ingraham, Boortz, Schultz or AAR. Or Casey Kasem, for that matter. Barter is what works well.

The superstars (Stern, Limbaugh) are the exception. Money does change hands. And lots of it. But they deliver the ratings.

8. The market is so tiny
for angry white males. The area is too educated for the simpleminded crap. The sponsors are getting no upscale or wide traction airing that garbage. Lonsberry took them all down and woke them up. It's like playing country western in Vienna.

Money. Audience share. However if this liberal, thoughtful radio doesn't shake things up it doesn't mean they will be carried automatically either. Also, if they get corporate sponsors nervous and turn off buyers or criticize the sponsors they will be in worse trouble than the low quality hate spewers from Clear Channel.
