(Andrew) "Young says he won't run for Senate" (GA)
Edited on Fri Oct-03-03 08:15 AM by Frodo
"Former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young announced today that he would not run for the Senate seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Zell Miller."

"Young made his announcement at an 8:30 a.m. news conference. "I decided I could not be the candidate. I was afraid I would win," he said to laughter from supporters."

I believe that was our best shot at "keeping" that seat.

1. Heard on NPR that Sam Nunn's daughter is giving "serious consideration"
to running for Miller's seat.

2. I kept thinking that Nunn would've been a better candidate anyway
But it's too bad that Andy isn't in the race. I hope that he considers being in the Democratic presidential cabinet.

3. That was mentioned in the article
But she's 36 and if being the daughter of a popular Senator was enough? We wouldn't be talking about re-taking the seat in Alaska.

5. Her age shouldn't be too much of a problem
And the comparisons to Murkowski aren't just. Murkowski was given her seat by her father, Nunn would have to win her seat through an election.

Also, look at all of the current senators (aside from Murkowski) who have been directly related to other senators:

Mark Pryor (father was Sen. David Pryor)
Chris Dodd (father was Sen. Thomas Dodd)
Evan Bayh (father was Sen. Birch Bayh)
Edward Kennedy (brother was Sen. John Kennedy)
Elizabeth Dole (husband was Sen. Robert Dole)
Lincoln Chafee (father was Sen. John Chafee)
Robert Bennett (father was Sen. Wallace Bennett)

This isn't even counting people like Hillary Clinton, John Sununu, and Mary Landrieu, all of whom have strong political ties. Having a famous name can mean a great deal in being elected to the Senate.

4. Bad Senate news today
I'll update GPR after school, but it will have shifted to the right.
