Clark Worked For Ark. Data Firm
Acxiom Role Part of Surveillance Debate

By Robert O'Harrow Jr.
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, September 27, 2003; Page A08

Retired Gen. Wesley K. Clark helped an Arkansas information company win a contract to assist development of an airline passenger screening system, one of the largest surveillance programs ever devised by the government.

Starting just after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, Clark sought out dozens of government and industry officials on behalf of Acxiom Corp., a data powerhouse that maintains names, addresses and a wide array of personal details about nearly every adult in the United States and their households, according to interviews and documents.

Clark, a Democrat who declared himself a presidential candidate 10 days ago, joined Acxiom's board of directors in December 2001. He earned $300,000 from Acxiom last year and was set to receive $150,000, plus potential commissions, this year, according to financial disclosure records. He owns several thousand shares of Acxiom stock worth more than $67,000.

Clark's consulting role at Acxiom puts him near the center of a national debate over expanded government authority to use personal data and surveillance technology to fight the war on terrorism and protect homeland security.

1. Isn't he suppose to oppose the Patriot Act?
How does that square? I don't know about this system, but seems invasive. Of course, a Gen. would be a great consultant and board member on a project like that.

2. Is the WP honest?
I have read posts here for 2 yrs. There seems to be some conflict.

These stories are like mules,if its going your way climb up and ride it. I did read over at MWO how this paper and many others smeared the election in 2000.
I can't take their word as truth anymore.

3. Prove it false and post your link
I posted the facts of Clark's voting history and fundraiser history and it was denied as Right-wing smear by his supporters here. Turned out to be true. I hope his supporters will look into this and find out the facts before they dismiss it.

I will bookmark this thread--when you prove the article wrong--please post the link to the facts (not opinion). Thanks in advance.

4. CAPPS II is Ascroftian
Dems and repubs in Congress have opposed it. Libs and cons have opposed it via ACLU action.

This must be explained. Once there is an explanation, if it is insufficient, let the apologist postures be struck.

The demand that we simply TRUST our govt to know what's best for us is positively "last century"- pre-New American Century, that is.

5. You left this out...
from the article:

Government and industry officials who have attended meetings with Clark described him as thoughtful and persuasive. Jones, the Acxiom official, said Clark repeatedly stressed the need to "properly balance legitimate privacy interests and the need for security."
