If you'd consider a campaign contribution to support the guy who has the BEST real chance to beat Bush, go to Graham For President and put "Laura Kinsale" down as your BobCat. I've pledged to raise 1k in contributions. We may not be "Fat Cats" but we're scrappin'.

3. Again, excellent interview with Graham.
Scheiffer asked Graham point blank if the "foreign government" involved in the execution of 9-11 is Saudi Arabia; his response was (paraphrasing..) "Bob, I don't want to have to take a detour to the federal penitentiary during my Presidential campaign."

Scheiffer asked whether Graham's intelligence committee found any viable links between Al-Qaeda and SH, and Bob's answer was "NO". He went on to say that OBL and SH are ideologically opposed to one another and were found to have no joint effort in 9-11.

One of the many things I appreciate about Graham is that when he speaks, no matter what the situation, it is purely conversational, as if he were sitting with you on your front porch. He's comfortable in his interactions with people, not pompous, overly dramatic or confrontational. He's just himself. Like a quiet hound dog on Bush's trail....

5. Did he mention the "I" word again?
He did the world a service for getting "impeachment" into the national newswires!

7. My jaw dropped
when he talked about the extent of the support given to the 9/11 terrorists from what I can only guess to be Saudi Arabia. I assumed there were people in SA who financially supported the terrorists but from what Graham said, it goes much deeper than that.

Here's my advice for the Graham campaign...extra security. Keep this man safe.

8. Graham's not the physical coward that B*sh is
Edited on Sun Jul-20-03 01:25 PM by lkinsale
I see your point, but every photo I've seen of Graham he's in the middle of people.

Unlike Bush, who had to jump back in his dark-window limo when people boo'ed him at his own inaugural parade. (I was there.)

9. Here is much more of the interview.
(All of this is paraphrased....)

Graham: As we see it, things are not quite as positive from this side of the world as what Ambassador Paul Bremer has outlined... we're suffering continuing casualties, the head General of Central Command has now started describing this as a guerrilla war, which indicates a greater degree of coordination, our soldiers have had their deplyoment extended further, and Rumsfeld has said this will cost twice as much for this occupation as originally been projected.

There are serious problems mixed in with what Bremer has indicated.

The 9-11 report due out this month, the 800-page report, unfortunately will not completely inform Americans of what they need to know.... much is still classified... I think in many of those most important classified sections, the classification had more to do with the Agency wishing to avoid embarrassment by the disclosure of their actions or inactions rather than the protection of some nat'l security interests....

Scheiffer: So you're saying that this adm & its intel agencies are keeping this info from Americans for what, for political reasons?...

Graham: Yes.... the answer to your question is yes... the reason is not because they contain security interests... the ironic part is, in some parts of the report, some info is classified, yet in other parts of the report, the very same info is declassified....

Scheiffer: What are some of the subjects you think there should be more info about, that's being withheld?...

Graham: I think a key issue is the role of foreign gov'ts leading up to 9-11 and then the response of the US after 9-11, after those role disclosures.... it's always been curious to me how 19 people, many who had very little affinity w/ the US, several couldn't speak English, could come here and hide for 18 mos or longer, plan and execute this attack, and not be disclosed.

Scheiffer: What about the connections between the Saudi royal family and various charities they financed, .... are we going to learn anything about that in this report?

Graham: Not much, ... the section that relates to the activities of foreign gov'ts is the MOST CLASSIFIED section of the report.... but I can say this, that the assistance of foreign gov'ts did not end with their acquiesence in charities providing funding for terrorists.

Scheiffer: When you speak of foreign gov'ts, let's just put the cards on the table... is it the Saudi royal family?

Graham: I don't want to take a detour to the federal penitentiary, in my campaign for President, so I cannot confirm, but I can say that that foreign gov't went far beyond facilitating charitable giving to terrorists, there was also direct governmental involvement w/ some of the terrorists, .... an unanswered question is... was the same assistance provided to the other 19 terrorists?!

BBC co-host Katty Kay: About the WMD argument brewing all this week.... was there someone in the White House that wanted this info to get out there, even though the CIA and State Dept had their doubts about it?

Graham: I voted aginst the resolution, not because of Niger, but I thought it would divert our attn from these other terrorist groups, the principal ememies of the US which are Al-Qaeda and other internat'l terrorist groups and that is precisely what has happened... one of which, 7 Americans were killed.

As to the WH increasing the sense of imminence, the VP went to CIA on several occasions, asked specifically for additional info on the Niger/Iraq connection... the US sent an experienced ambassador to Niger to investigate, he then came back after a full review with the findings that these documents were fabrications... you cannot tell me that the VP didn't receive the same report that the CIA got, and that the VP didn't communicate that report to the Pres or Nat'l Security Advisors to the Pres., so I have to believe that the Pres. knew or should have known that this info had been found unreliable by the CIA.

Scheiffer: Did your committee find any connection betweeen SH and Al-Qaeda?

Graham: No. Certainly none as to 9-11 and very limited as to events either before or after 9-11... in fact there was an enmity between OBL and SH based on their quite different views of the Islamic world.

----end------
