Little Understood Ballot Initiative Could Have 'Devastating Effect' On Gay
http://www.365gay.com/NewsContent/091103prop54.htm

While media attention focuses on California governor Gray Davis and the efforts to remove him from office, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force says not enough attention is being paid to Proposition 54, a little understood ballot initiative that could have a big impact on gay lives.

The NGLTF is so concerned it has sent a field team to California to work with other minority groups to defeat the measure in next month's election.

"Prop 54 is authored by the same folks who are anti-immigrant, anti-youth, anti-gay and anti-choice," said Dave Fleischer, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Director of Organizing and Training.

1. I oppose Prop. 54 but I do not understand their point
AFAIK no state agency presently gathers information about sexual orientation. It looks to me like their objection is on general principles, which is fine, but I don't see why it would affect GLT people in particular.

Aren't gender identity issues distributed about equally among racial and ethnic groups? I don't see why they think they have a dog in this fight.

2. their point is
there are members of the racial groups that are gay and it would affect these people as well as straight members of the racial groups

just because it's seen as a racial issue doesn't exclude it from being a gay issue as well and vice versa
