COLLEGE DEMS PRESIDENT ENDORSES EDWARDS

COLLEGE DEMS PRESIDENT ENDORSES EDWARDS
(09/10/03) U.S. Sen. John Edwards on Wednesday touted the endorsement of Ashley Bell, a 22-year-old law student who is national president of the College Democrats of America.

During a conference call with college newspaper reporters, Bell, who grew up in Gainesville, Georgia, said he could identify with Edwards' small-town values and liked his "College for Everyone" plan, which provides a free first year of college for qualified students willing to work part-time.

Bell, now a student at the Louisiana State University Law Center, in 2000 became the youngest African-American delegate at a Democratic convention.

4. Nick...I didn't know you cared...I'm touched.
I know you like Kerry - as do I.

There seems to be quite an overlap among the Kerry/Edwards/Kucinich crowd.

5. Edwards is also great!
And good for him that he gained this endorsement.

I predict that, if Edwards does not make it this time, there is a good chance he WILL he President someday.

3. I'll be surprised if this amounts to much
The CDA Executive Board doesn't interact with the general membership much. There is no true nationwide network to get the thoughts of the national organization into the hands of every member of every chapter. Most of what does get through is filtered through from one or two people in each chapter who might pay attention to stuff like this. I am the person who does this at my chapter, for example, and that only because I'm part of national CDA, for all it amounts to. None of them will care that a guy they've never met and never heard speak has endorsed a candidate. I imagine a similar picture across the country. The same would be true regardless of who Bell was endorsing here.

That said, I think Edwards does have the capability to do well among young people, precisely because he's one of the youngest in the field. But I have no idea what it would take for that potential to be realized. If he can figure that out, I say more power to him, because if young people turn out in the primaries and stick around to vote against Bush in the general, that makes things that much easier for us to beat him.

My two cents.

8. Its a start
It does show that Edwards has the ability to attract young people with his message. I am sure that he and his campaign are working hard to build on that.

11. Edwards on Daily Show tonight
Edwards will definitely do well with young people. And he was great on the Daily Show last year, so I am looking forward to watching him tonight.

9. Good for Edwards. He's not my first choice.
However, if he gets the nomination, I'll back him. I like the idea of having someone knowledgeable about the law in the White House. I still prefer Kucinich. But Edwards is very likable.
