Dean Lacks Money in the Bank

By RON FOURNIER
AP Political Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Despite a recent fund- raising surge, Howard Dean lags behind his top Democratic presidential rivals in a key category: Money in the bank.

The former Vermont governor cemented his standing as a top-tier candidate by raising $7.5 million between April and June, first among the nine Democratic candidates for the quarter. That gave him a total of $10.1 million raised since the beginning of the year...

- Lieberman and Dean did better than expected in second-quarter fund- raising, though their money-in-the-bank totals are low...

- Kerry may have the best combination: He has the most money in the bank while leading in New Hampshire polls and gaining ground on Gephardt in Iowa. Kerry also has raised the most money since Jan. 1 - $13 million - with Edwards a close second and Dean third...

Dean believes he has an edge in matching money, because he is getting donations from more people in smaller amounts.

3. Yawn
After builing up that the second quarter totals would be a good indicator of who's doing well, they couldn't just leave it there with Dean in first.

Cash on hand indicates only that - cash on hand - it has no real-world bearing on depth or breadth of support.

I can't wait to see an analysis of cash on hand including anticipated federal matching funds to arrive in January.

Now THAT would be a genuine measure of success.

4. There's quite a buzz over Dean's internet fundraising
You could tell by the talk on the Sunday morning shows. It sounds like there has been a shift in the landscape for candidates who will be able to connect with the internet donors. Hopefully, it will be an avenue for Democrats to consistently raise money.

5. Dean has a problem with $10.1M cash on hand?
Edited on Mon Jul-07-03 06:57 PM by MercutioATC
When Kerry has $13M? How does this translate into a problem, especially when Dean's contributions increased from Q1 to Q2 and Kerry's decreased (granted, 2 quarters is WAY to early to project a trend)?

Pure spin...

9. He spent
400 thousand out of 10 million 500 thousand. And unlike Kerry, who had no Republican opponent to reelection in 2002, Dean has to use this money. It is foolish to say Dean is spending money and Kerry isn't. Kerry is simply using perfectly legal other money to campaign.

10. Spending $300k on early commercials in Iowa...
Granted, it's a risk, but a calculated one. What other spending is he doing that the other candidates aren't?

11. Some other things to note
Unlike many national figures Dean had no previous fundraising list. Kerry, Edwards, Gephardt, and certainly Lieberman all did. Thus for Dean to have raised the money he did at the cost he did is nothing short of amazing. The only real advantage Dean might have had is gay and lesbian money but I really doubt that gays and lesbians accounted for that large a percentage of his money. Of the several Dean doners on here only a couple are gay or lesbian to my knowledge.

8. The answer is simple...
Edited on Mon Jul-07-03 10:10 PM by Nazgul35
some Kerry supporters have a problem with Dean and have nothing of import to say about their candidate and can do nothing but tear down the cnadidate they are most threatened by...I wont mention any names but....

begins with N and ends with _J...

7. Looks to me like...
Dean is attracting a lot of attention here in this forum, just as he is in the media. Love him, tolerate him, or hate him (or think he's
a "small arrogant little tyrant" and "in a way far worse than Bush"), he's getting a lot of attention. Gotta love it.

As for money in the bank, Dean is "money in the bank" as far as I'm concerned! :)

13. And to add to what you just said,
with the amount of free press Dean has recieved lately and the use of the internet to build grassroots support and organization on the cheap, I would argue that perhaps Dean doesn't need as much money on hand as other candidates.

12. He's spent less than Kerry, and has more than Lieberman
Kerry had $13 plus about $2.5 million leftover from his Senate account, and now has $11 million.

And Dean's already shown campaign ads.

Dean is doing fine.

15. It's funny
Obviously you hate Dean with all your heart and soul, yet you post about him all the time. Any reason for this fixation?

16. It's almost like
homophobes and gays. Maybe someone has a secret crush on a certain candidate. ;)
