Local attorney speaks of Dean

PORT ST. LUCIE -- Howard Dean never talked about running for president during his freshman year at Yale, according to one local attorney.

And he should know. He was Dean's roommate.

Attorney Joe Mancini shared floor space with Dean and two other freshmen at the esteemed New Haven, Conn., university in 1967 and 1968. Mancini said Dean was interested in politics, but never talked about running for office.

"No shocking moments, police arrests or anything outrageous," Mancini said. "He certainly has my vote."

Mancini said he and Dean have e-mailed each other several times since he announced he was running for president. A Dean spokeswoman said many friends from his past have joined him on the campaign trail or found other ways to support his drive for the presidency.

"He is amazed and excited about the amount of people from his life that have come out to help him," said Courtney O'Donnell, Dean for President communications director. "They seem like friends for life."
