Recall of Nevada Governor
Here's a link:

http://www.cnn.com/2003/ALLPOLITICS/08/28/nevada.recall.ap/index.html

It seems that Repukes want to remove Gov. Kenny Guinn (also a Republican) because of his recent tax increases. I'd like to know if we could gain anything from this. I've heard rumors of people wanting to recall Tim Pawlenty and Sonny Perdue also, as well as Ed Rendell. This is the first time one of the major news sources has said anything about this.

Though I doubt that it will go through (Guinn is popular and 25 percent of the electorate will be nearly impossible to attract), I know that Democrats should at least look at this. There aren't a great many prominent Democrats in Nevada, and the ones that are prominent can't be spared. Sen. Harry Reid and Rep. Shelley Berkley are both needed in the Congress. For. Atty. Gen. Frankie Sue Del Papa didn't seek reelection in 2002, so she could be a possibility (I know that she was somehow involved in the Yucca Mountain incident. I don't know what that entailed, and I'm not sure if that has hurt or helped her politically). 2000 Senate candidate Ed Bernstein, who wouldn't be a great candidate, would probably run. The best candidate, therefore, for the Democrats would be For. Sen. Richard Bryan. He retired (he wasn't voted out of office), he's very popular in Nevada, and he's only 66.

On the Repuke side, the most likely candidates would be Rep. Jim Gibbons or his wife Dawn Gibbons.

1. The NV Conservatives
are pissed at Guinn. They want to recall him and have the Lt Gov (also a Repig) take over. I don't think they're looking for a new election after the recall.

Guinn was elected with 69% of the vote last year. I don't think this will happen.

PS - the Conservatives in this state are REAL assholes.

2. Can they do that?
I am not claiming in any way to be an expert on Nevada Recall Law, but can they only recall him and not have an election? If that is the case, I'd much rather see a Repuke in office that conservatives hate one that they love (I'd pick Olympia Snowe any day over Rick Santorum)

4. It's harder in Nevada
there needs to be a special election, if the recall goes through. But while in California, all you need is 10% of the voting electorate, in Nevada you need 25% which is a considerable amount more. That and something like 68% of Nevada is against the recall so it has no chance in hell of passing. The only thing the recall will succeed in doing is pissing off a lot of people.

6. I was aware of the 25 percent thing
(California's ten percent of the electorate is a joke. I think in almost every state you could find ten percent of the electorate who doesn't like the governor). What I'm more interested in is whether it is a two-part question like in California. If it is, then there may be more support than one would think. Those 22 percent of Democrats who voted for Joseph Neal in 2002 would probably consider signing if there were a shot for the Democrats to take the governor's mansion. Couple that along with many irate neo-cons, and the recall seems possible. However, if the question is simply whether to recall, and not who will replace Guinn if he is recalled, then this won't receive any Democratic support.

3. Oh yeah, they are...
I live in Salt Lake City now, and I swear people here are more liberal here than in Las Vegas. From my experience, there are WAY more a-hole Republicans and Libertarians in Vegas, believe it or not. Of course, I stay the hell away from Provo or any place in Utah that isn't Park City or SLC. The only think I miss about Nevada politics are Reid and Goodman (grudgingly). I went from good Mormon to evil Mormon in that respect. I don't like Guinn and think Nevadans were stupid to elect him. Nevertheless, this recall bullshit really has to stop. He was elected in a fair election. This is a democratic republic, not Burger King.

5. The Repugs are out to get him because he opposed Yucca Mountain
This is one of the places where Bush and Dean agree.

First off whats wrong with yucca mountain?

Secondly the thugs here in nevada that are sponsoring this garbage are doing it because guin refused to let them reopen a budget passed by a simple majority in order to avoid raising taxes.

It has absolutely nothing to do with bush and also has no chance of hapening.
