Congressman Tells Area Residents That John Kerry Can Beat Bush at the Polls

August  10,  2003
Rock Hill Herald
by Caroline Brustad
Rock Hill, South Carolina -
Presidential hopeful John Kerry can unite the Democratic party and offer a strong voice for America's middle class, a U.S. congressman told area residents Saturday during a Rock Hill visit. U.S. Rep. Gregory Meeks, D-N.Y., who has ties to the Rock Hill area, said he met with each Democratic presidential candidate and was most impressed with the U.S. Senator from Massachusetts.

"This great country cannot stand four more years of George W. Bush," Meeks told about 20 people during a free breakfast at Essie's Catering on Ebenezer Avenue. Democrats need a candidate who can unite the diverse party and beat Bush at the polls, he said. "John Kerry is the one person that can bring us together." Kerry, a decorated Vietnam veteran, understands international matters and the need for a strong military, Meeks said. The 59-year-old senator would push to get more money to local emergency workers to improve homeland security in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and the war in Iraq, he said.
Among other highlights of Kerry's platform described by Meeks are:
• Pushing for tax cuts that benefit the middle class instead of wealthy Americans;
• Stopping U.S. job losses by deterring illegal immigrants and making selective trade agreements;
• Improving education by modernizing schools, giving more federal money to schools and offering job training for a variety of professions; and
• Negotiating with pharmaceutical firms to lower drug costs and creating a Medicare prescription drug plan.

1. That's a serious endorsement for Kerry.
If any candidate can pull a majority of the black vote, I think they get the nomination. I think Edwards and Gephardt also have a good shot at it. But it's a long way till February.

2. Kweisi Mfume likes Kerry, too.
This race is just starting, no matter what story the corporate media is trying to push. I think the guys who have been diligently doing their groundwork will start to move up.

3. Excellent
The congressman is right on the mark. Kerry is graceful and knows what he's talking about. No one else has his kind of presence or the astuteness of his policies.

4. I attended a "Meeks Endorses Kerry" reception in COlumbia and there
was a strong turn out from the Civil Rights wing of the SC Democratic Party.

Two weeks later I attended the opening of Kerry's office in Columbia. The room was filled with the backbone of the party including SC House Dem leader (Rep SMith) and Judge Alex Sanders. Kerry is doing all the right networking in SC.

5. Isn't Alex Sanders amazing?
That man was cheated out of that Senate seat.

WASHINGTON - Rep. Harold Ford Jr. (D-Tenn.) Saturday endorsed Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) for president, becoming the first prominent Tennessee Democrat to make a choice in the Democratic nomination fight since former vice president Al Gore announced he would not run.

Ford and his father, Harold Ford, also will lend their fund-raising and organizational support to Kerry in Tennessee and Ford Jr. will appear as a surrogate at Kerry campaign events.

"If I have to get married to help him, I'll help him," cracked the 32-year-old bachelor.

"I'm very touched by the depth of Harold's support," Kerry said in an interview with The Commercial Appeal. "He's really one of the bright stars in our party and one of the voices who has broken out in Washington for a new way of doing things."

7. Ford is very close with Al Gore
and I wouldn't doubt that he discussed this with him first.

8. He could beat Bush
I am suporting Kucinich, who could also beat Bush, because I agree more with Kucinich on the issues. Though Kerry is probably my second choice.

And I hope that either way we get a Dept. of Peace.

11. pretty big endorsement
I think the nomination is going to be decided in the southern primaries, not New Hampshire and Iowa. - no democrat can win without an energized minority vote, and that ain't exactly Iowa or NH.

Kerry is laying the groundwork.
