Yesterday evening, my family and I attended a book signing by Sen. Hillary Clinton in Kansas City ("Living History"). The crowd was estimated to be 1,000 to 1,200 attendees.
I was a little disappointed at first since she didn’t speak before she began signing books. Last fall we attended Al and Tipper Gore’s book signing and enjoyed their talk beforehand. Perhaps Sen. Clinton had a time constraint since she was attending another event later that evening.
As we passed in front of the table where she was sitting, she did speak briefly to my 11-year old daughter. In the few seconds available, I managed to utter, “Welcome to Kansas City, Senator. I hope to see you in the White House again.” She smiled and replied, “Thank you, sir” with an air of class and poise sorely missing in the present administration.
My daughter wrote the following message on the back of her admission ticket, “I am an 11-old girl. I enjoyed seeing you. I saw Al Gore last fall. I hope to meet Mr. Clinton some day.” This went into a container for messages/gifts for Hillary (some of the gifts appeared to be homemade cards & posters by children).
There were demonstrators: two. They stood directly across the street from the event. They were dressed like devils and I thought at first they were parking valets for the business there engaged in some kind of marketing gimmick. As I got closer, I could see they had anti-Hillary signs. There was a third protestor who drove by and shouted “Down with Hillary.” This happened again and I thought it was a fourth protestor until I saw it was the same man as before who merely circled around the block to have his voice heard again.
All in all, it was an exciting event, although I still wish she had spoken before the book signing.
