PA Poll: Specter Slips But Strong Candidate, Bush Tops All Dem Challengers

PA Poll: Specter Slips But Strong Candidate, Bush Tops All Dem Challengers
From July 30 to August 4, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,037 Pennsylvania registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 3 percent. The survey includes 372 Democrats with a margin of error of +/- 5.1 percent.

(note: favorable rating format is favorable-unfavorable-mixed)

Specter Approval 57%-27%
Specter Favorable 47%-19%-27%
Specter 53% Hoeffel 29%
Specter Re-Elect 46%-40%

Toomey Favorable 8%-3%-8%
Hoeffel Favorable 12%-4%-10%

Santorum Approval 56%-28%
Santorum Favorable 45%-22%-22%

* Approval 60%-35%
* 54% Lieberman 38%
* 55% Kerry 37%
* 56% Gephardt 36%
* 57% Dean 34%

Lieberman 26%
Kerry 15%
Gephardt 14%
Dean 9%
Edwards 6%
Moseley Braun 6%
Kucinich 3%
Graham 3%
Sharpton 2%

Specter is currently leading Hoeffel based on name recognition alone. His generic re-elect is only 46%-clearly in the danger zone below 50%. The Dem primary is also name recognition now, as are the * vs. Dem matchups.

1. He's definately in trouble
53% in a head to head at this point puts him in the danger zone, I would only put him around 51-52% of the vote at this point.

5. Not that I know of
But this quinnipiac poll isn't on poll track yet. The Mellman Group and Quinnipiac have been the only ones polling the PA Senate race so far. I am not equiped to make predictions on primaries anyways.

4. a negative consideration about this...
I think the generic re-elect numbers are so low because those saying "someone else" includes some hard-core Toomey supporters who will end up voting for Specter if he is the nominee, which he probably will be...
