NYT: anarchists, environmentalists, pacifists! Oh, MY!
Anarchists?????!!!!???

http://www.nytimes.com/2003/08/10/nyregion/10CONV.html

One night last week, dozens of young people — anarchists, environmentalists, pacifists, and just about every other ist out there — crammed together in a Brooklyn storefront to brainstorm how they would take advantage of a unique opportunity a year away.

The man they view as their archnemesis, President Bush, will visit their turf next summer for the 2004 Republican National Convention at Madison Square Garden, a springboard for Mr. Bush's re-election campaign and for what dissenters say will be protests on a scale not seen in the city in dozens of years.

Those at the meeting discussed everything from where protesters could stay to proposed rally themes. One woman suggested, "How Bush stole the election in Florida," and another offered, "The politicization of 9/11." Perhaps most important, they promised to bring together their divergent voices in the name of tarnishing what is planned to be a shining moment for the president.

1. I really think protesters will be blind-sided
by Ashcroft.....I sense they will be looking at ways to incorporate the protesting into a anti-dem campaign issue just before the Nov. election.

It should be done in Washington.

3. Big improvement from 68
Big improvement from 68 when the protests took place at the Dem convention.

4. If anyone knows the organizers...
...pleasepleaseplease advocate for keeping it intelligently restrained and classy--there's nothing Rove & Co. want more than images of "violent, radical" Dem sympathizer disrupting the GOP's convention near the Sept. 11 site to mobilize reactionary turnout.

That doesn't exclude large and powerful, though! IMHO, the most powerful thing would be to get permission for a huge demonstration space, get massive turnout and then stage a silent vigil--the power of seeing like half a million people, dressed in black, with silver/white on black protest signs and banners, but remaining absolutely quiet while they marched would provide a great contrast to the GOP's shameful politicization of Sept. 11...

5. This From The Paper That Refused To Publish #s of Protestors In February
I don't find this surprising from the NYT at all, considering their coverage of the anti-war movement.

But I don't give a damn. I'll be there any way - making sure that people keep their heads. I nearly got trampled by horses the last time. I'll be damned if Bloomberg is gonna keep us out of this one.

6. They ought to do this
When the audience gets silent to hear Bush speak, every protestor should shout:

"Bush lied and thousands died!" and
"Where are Bush's Enron Buddies now!" and
"No more years, no more tears!" and
"Bush is Crook, don't let him off the Hook!"

Over and over again. So when Bush tries to speak the voices overpower him.

I would also lay out many body bags lying in pools of oil.
