Representative Bill Posey (R) from Florida, had the gall to issue the following e-mail to his constituents. Given that Posey is located in Florida, you can imagine he has a lot of elderly constituents who are either confused or who are scared.
My commitment to seniors has been and remains that there shall be NO changes to Medicare or Social Security for those in or near retirement.
There has been recent discussion in the media regarding Medicare and Social Security, considerable confusion, and outright misinformation. Here are the facts:
1. NO ONE IS PROPOSING ANY CHANGES TO MEDICARE OR SOCIAL SECURITY FOR THOSE IN OR NEAR RETIREMENT. Anyone who claims otherwise is intentionally misleading seniors.
So, first Posey basically says - You don't have to worry, it doesn't affect YOUR Medicare, just the Medicare of your children and grandchildren.
2. The Ryan budget proposal includes NO CHANGES to Social Security for anyone of ANY age. The only provision it included related to Social Security is a provision directing the President to submit a plan to Congress to restore balance in the Trust Fund if the Social Security Trustees deem that Social Security is not sustainable.
OK - no argument there, although I don't know HOW the budget proposes to restore balance to the Trust Fund.
3. The Ryan budget proposal makes NO CHANGES to Medicare for those 55 and older. Since the Congressional Budget Office reported in March that the Medicare Trust Fund will be completely exhausted and unable to pay all Medicare bills for any seniors after 2020, the budget recommends some changes be considered for those ages 54 and younger so that Medicare is available to pay benefits beyond 2020. The proposal would preserve the safety net that Medicare provides.
So, Posey says the Ryan Budget "recommends some changes be considered for those age 54 and younger" BULL!!! It dismantles Medicare and replaces it with a system that will increase costs to seniors because it leaves people at the mercy of insurance companies. Posey also doesn't mention that he wants to repeal the Affordable Care Act which will prevent people being denied coverage due to a pre-existing condition.
If Medicare is truly going broke then figure out what taxes levels are needed to keep Medicare from going broke and then raise taxes to those levels.
