Report: Clinton able to continue run by postponing debt repayment
From CNN Associate Political Editor Rebecca Sinderbrand
WASHINGTON (CNN) – Sen. Hillary Clinton was able to continue her presidential run until the end of the primary season in large part because of generous creditors who allowed her to postpone repayment of her debts, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Some have been sympathetic to Clinton’s plight; others have grabbed headlines by eventually pressing for repayment.
Citing campaign finance reports, CRP estimates that the Clinton campaign owed $9.5 million to various vendors as of the end of April. Obama owed $2 million, but as the winner of the Democratic nomination, he may not have as much trouble fundraising to cover those debts.
Employees of the same firms have also been donating their own money to presidential campaigns, according to the CRP assessment. Clinton’s debts included $216,000 owed to the advertising firm Dewey Square Group at the end of April. Still, that firm’s employees have donated $41,000 to her campaign, or 10 times the amount they gave to Obama.
Her campaign also owes AT&T Mobility $163,000 and Verizon Wireless another $5,400. “Verizon's employees appear to have gotten fed up in April,” CRP said in its new report. “After months of staying out of the presidential fundraising game, as Clinton's debt became increasingly stale, individuals at the wireless company suddenly donated $57,000 to Obama.”
Barack Obama’s campaign has begun urging visitors to its Web site to “show your support” for Clinton, who will need assistance from the presumptive Democratic nominee's supporters to pay down her debt, including millions in personal loans.
