The United Citizens Party of South Carolina held their convention yesterday in Columbia. Adolph Reed of the Labor Party was the keynote speaker. Walter Brown came from Oregon as a number of us are trying to get a Socialist Party off the ground in the state.
Walter Brown was nominated to run on the UCP Line for President in the state of South Carolina. Several other folks were nominated for various lines - State Senator, several house reps, etc.
The United Citizens Party was formed in 1969 when the old Democratic establishment in the state was excluding African-Americans from running for office. Currently the UCP is made up of, or contains, several caucuses - Progressive Democrats; Greens; Labor Party and Socialist. We like to think that we keep pressure on the Democratic Party in South Carolina.
South Carolina is dominated by the repubs. The Governor is currently succeeding in his bid to have the public universities and colleges of SC privatized, as an example of the control the right has in the state.
Anyway, thought some folks might be interested in what a bunch of progressives and leftists, including a good number of Democrats, were up to in SC yesterday.
Fight the good fight!
