What's your list of 25 of Dennis Kucinich's most important policies?
Edited on Sat Jan-31-04 10:13 AM by MMT
My list would include
1. Stabilizing Iraq under UN moderation
2. Universal non-profit healthcare
3. Regaining control over US trade policies (by pulling out of NAFTA and the WTO)
4. Creating jobs for all
5. Treating marijuana like alcohol
6. Redefining drug abuse as a medical problem

I won't go on, because I want to see what other people would say.
Top twenty-five policies.

1. At the top of my list
is the creation of the Department of Peace. This shows a whole new focus for the world.

I agree about NAFTA, jobs creation, and the dismantling of the stranglehold of insurance/drug companies via a single payer health insurance program. Also the decriminalization of marijuana and correctly defining drug abuse as a medical problem.

Dennis's ideas are great, and I hope that more people start listening to them.

3. only 25?!
I like that he is open to election reform. His stand on the war. His stand on FAIR trade and fair wages. His stand on cutting the pork out of the defense budget and putting it into health and education. His stand on taxes. His stand on civil linerties, worker's rights, children's rights, the environment.

Oh, let's face it. I love just about everything the guy does and thinks. ;^)

4. support for real small business
Kucinich's platform, in general, puts control in the hands of the people, rather than in the hands of large corporations. The most important policies he has for doing this, I believe, are

1. Repeal of NAFTA and WTO, with replacement by bilateral treaties emphasizing labor and environmental protections.

2. Universal single payer health care. (Go into any mom-and-pop shop, and ask them about health care. They don't have any, and don't have a chance of getting any.)

3. Supporting independent businesses, producers and local packers against the monopolies.

4. Increasing OSHA enforcement.

5. Funding development of national infrastructure., urban and rural.

6. Progressive-schedule income taxation.

6. well, my teeth and me certainly can't wait for a phased-in/para-corporate
Edited on Sat Jan-31-04 03:04 PM by cosmicdot
corporate anything, medical system ... so, I totally support Dennis and his plans for health care ... plus, I'm not getting any younger ... the time is now! The means and resources are available. All we need is the right leadership ... and, that is Dennis Kucinich.

since it's difficult to rank what needs to put (just about everything) on line one, next to #1

... I'll just mention another of Dennis's ideas ... I don't even know if any of the other candidates are even thinking outside the Jack in the Box mindset:

Local Food Systems

"A Kucinich Administration will shift USDA funding and focus away from the promotion of concentrated intensive and industrial agribusiness. The new focus will benefit family farmers, rural communities, the environment, and consumers, with policies crafted to enable farmers to earn a fair price and to provide safe, nutritious food to all people. A Kucinich Administration will increase funding for regional food processing facilities, marketing assistance, farm-to-school programs, on-farm renewable energy, and the Farmers Market Nutrition Program. Agricultural research and development institutions will be given funding priority to help family farmers make a transition to profitable and sustainable agriculture."

The way I understand the idea is to encourage more local/regional food markets ... which would have side-effects like reducing the shipping of foods over long distances (which, of course, reduces uses of fuel, etc.); and, reduces the control of the mega-agri-corporate business ... to improve the quality of food, etc.

This, at a minimum, tells me Dennis has a vision for improving our future and our lives and our standard of living.

9. You're welcome!
Any one of those 25 things could make a long, interesting thread on it's own.

Dennis owns the issues, lock stock and barrel if you want to advance human rights and the quality of life.

14. If you have a fair tax plan
then taxes will not go up for the vast majority of The People.

Since corporations and the very rich do not pay their share of taxes we are undercollecting massively right now.

If cronyistic graft were eliminated, a huge percentage of our tax money would be returned to benefit The People.

Common civic benefit is not a bad thing, and to have highways and running water, not to mention a compassionate, sustainable and functional country, we all should be proud to contribute to the common good. That's real patriotism, not the shallow, self serving, jingoistic, demagoguery that masquerades for patriotism these days.

Great post - I can't be more in agreement with Dennis' stand.

On another matter, do you know Octafish? I've tried to contact him through Skinner, but no luck. I think the time lag between America and Australia is putting us out of synch. Any help gratefully acknowledged
Thanx
