State Sen. West enters mayoral race
Republican says he offers `experienced leadership'

The race for Spokane mayor got more crowded Thursday as Jim West, a 24-year veteran of local politics, joined the field for the city's chief executive.

"Experienced leadership is what I offer," West, a Republican state senator, said about an hour after filing his petition of candidacy. "I'm entering this campaign because I've always wanted to be mayor, and I think I can do a good job."

West ran for the job three years ago and finished third in the primary behind incumbent John Talbott and the eventual winner, John Powers. It was the city's first selection of a chief executive under the "strong mayor" system.
