Former Clinton aide Jamie Metzl has a potential ally who could prove crucial in his bid to unseat embattled Rep. Karen McCarthy (D-Mo.).
Alan Wheat, who held McCarthy’s seat for 12 years before running a losing race for the Senate in 1994, said Tuesday that he will support Metzl if McCarthy drops out.
“As long as Karen McCarthy is running, I’ll support her,” Wheat said. “But everyone knows Jamie is a fine person. He’s certainly competent, as people in Washington and
Kansas City know. I would expect to fully expect to work for the nominee.”
However, Wheat said he had spoken to McCarthy, and expects her to run for a sixth term.
McCarthy has told The Kansas City Star that she will make a decision about her future by year’s end. McCarthy admitted earlier this year that she was an alcoholic after falling down an escalator while intoxicated during a late-night vote. She sought treatment at a rehabilitation clinic in Arizona.
