1. some email addresses in MN
Scott Simmons scott.simmons@state.mn.us
Mark Kiffmeyer mary.kiffmeyer@state.mn.us

You know, you've got all this contact info, which is great. But activists need to try to do some research on what their state is up to BEFORE contacting their state officials. Then if you can get them on the phone (or into a discussion by email), you won't sound like a complete DUfus. Some states are doing a pretty good job of ensuring that voting systems are secure and ballots are verifiable.

And then they should send a summary of what they learn to www.verifiedvoting.org.

Go to this DU link for more information on this:

2. RE: "activists need to try to do some research"
Your point is well taken, thanks. The State name is a link to the Secretary of States web site for each state. That is the first place to go to find out what's up in your state when it comes to elections.

Version 1.0.1 will contain the following link structure;

STATE NAME

with embedded link to State SoS web site home page.

SoS Home Page http://www.sos.xx.gov

Elections Page http://www.sos.xx.gov/elections.html

Election Law Page http://www.sos.xx.gov/title_search.asp

Voting Systems Page http://www.sos.xx.gov/elections/voting_systems.htm

What title do your 2 MN contacts have? What office do they work in? :)
Thanks for your input! :hi:

14. NASED and group purchases

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF STATE ELECTION DIRECTORS

President: Alice P. Miller, District of Columbia
President-Elect: Denise Lamb, New Mexico
Vice-President: Vicky Balogh, Alabama
Treasurer: Linda Lamone, Maryland
Secretary: Amy Naccarato, Utah

I don't know about DoC and Alabama, but the other states have all purchased one system statewide, haven't they?

And other members on the Votining systems board, ditto, like Williams and Georgia.

Is that a coincidence?

I think people should check out their state and if the state has or is doing a group purchase of a single vendors system, might take a peek at present or past involvement on NASED boards, ditto SOS with prior involvement as election directors.

Please post any comments on what else should be included in the release version of this list! Your comments CAN make a difference!
If you don't have any suggestions, the very least anyone can do is to e-mail your SoS office today! All it takes is to click on the e-mail link for your state! Just 5 minutes is all it takes! PLEASE!

10. Correction on Texas info
Thanks for compiling all this great information ParanoidPat. I just wanted to correct the Texas info. Gwyn Shea resigned and she's been replaced by Geoffrey S. Connor on August 26th.

I could not confirm the other two listings you had from their web page. (The McGeehan and Hanshaw-Ross contacts). The phone nubmers and
address you had for Shea are still correct but of course the e-mail has changed. They do not list one for Conner yet just a web based form link. Here are some of the pages if you want to double check

15. Dates for next State Legislative Sessions?
To really get the ball rolling, people need to check out state election law, usually through the SOS web.

Then, come up with a bill to make any changes necessary, especially if the state's been busy following The Election Center recommendations.

You write up the changes, reference the laws/code, and see if you can get legislators to sponsor it. You can always find a few.

You can write stuff that sounds pretty close to the mumbo-gumbo of technical terms.

When you reps take it in, it will go to coders and reviewers who will check it and make it work language-wise.

Get involved in getting the laws changed in your state. Especially one that says, "All voting systems will produce a voter-verified paper ballot, verified by the voter without an interface, (except for the disabled) that is deposited in a ballot box and used in recounts and audits of the voting system."

Also, as required by HAVA, if your state is doing that.

If your state has already purchased machines and is getting HAVA money, those machines must produce a permanent paper record with audit capacity- and touch screens DO NOT have audit capacity without a voter-verified paper ballot. Redundant storage- but not an independent, verified audit source that acts as the official ballot of record.
