Beachgoers walk past hundreds of crosses on Huntington Beach, California, erected in remembrance of the more than 770 US troops killed so far in Iraq (news - web sites). The anti-war memorial, dubbed 'Arlington West,' has been set up each Sunday for the past several weeks and is fashioned after similar projects on other California beaches. The United States and Britain will present the UN Security Council May 24 with the first draft of a resolution on Iraq(AFP/Getty Images/David McNew)

1. Thanks for posting this, deek
Glad you noticed the photo of the Huntington Beach "sister project." Have you seen it in person?

3. It'll be up all night before Memorial Day, too
The group is making arrangements to keep the project up both Sunday and Monday, so candles will be lit at sunset on Sunday. No camping is allowed at the beach, but to guard against potential vandalism (or curiosity-based rearrangement) of the site there will be people hanging out in shifts. I guess my non-military background shows in the way I phrase that!

The night photo at the Vets for Peace website was in late December at the same time as an annual harbor event called Festival of Lights, where all the boats and yachts are illuminated with Christmas lights and sail around looking lovely. Many tourists and locals come out, so we stayed on too. Arlington West shimmered like a cathedral.

Over 800 crosses this time ... God help us.
