PROTEST Bush at PENN STATE, Tuesday June 14
http://www.centredaily.com/mld/centredaily/11855219.htm

Centre County is preparing for its first visit from President George W. Bush.

Plans are for Bush to speak to the 2005 FFA conference Tuesday at Eisenhower Auditorium on Penn State's campus, according to sources. Bush reportedly will talk about Social Security and the need for reforming the program to allow for personal retirement accounts.

Penn State officials directed inquiries to the White House press office. A White House spokesman said today that announcements about Bush's schedule for the upcoming week will be made Friday.

But several sources, including police, confirmed that Bush will be here to talk Tuesday at a time to be announced.

2. More info
>Plan for Protesting W's Visit: Goal, Strategy, Crowd Building, Time/Location
>
>Goal: Use the media to prove Democrats are active, smart and
>respectable--that we are not the negative stereotypes Rs try to turn us into.
>
>Reasons Why Some Other Goals Wouldn't Work Out: We can't get in Bush's
>face because the Secret Service won't allow anybody within sight lines of
>the door he will be using. We can't heckle the speech because we can't get
>tickets. We shouldn't hassle the University because this event isn't their
>doing--the FFA convention just happens to be held on campus. The FFA kids
>are high schoolers being used by the Bush administration.
>
>W isn't expected to break any major news here, and as we are sandwiched
>between Santorum fundraisers, we don't expect much national media. More
>likely they will pick up feeds from local reporters if anything major
>develops; however there will likely be significant local TV coverage, as
>well as by the CDT and other papers.
>
>Strategy: The only chance of getting major coverage is to do something
>very different by way of protest. Screaming and cursing feel good, but
>that's typical protest, so not nationally newsworthy. It makes us look
>very bad through the media, and plays into the R spin game that we aren't
>responsible people. And Govoenor Rendell is likely coming--we don't want
>to embarrass him.
>
>What would be different is a silent protest--in the proud tradition of
>non-violence. Message of that is, the Bush Administration has silenced
>dissent. We can each bring a good sign about an issue of choice. Signs are
>more likely to be read if we aren't screaming.
>
>Two benefits: Because this strategy will surprise them, the media will be
>drawn to ask us about what we are doing. And this strategy will drive the
>Rs nuts. Expect them to do a counter protest; let them behave badly--they
>will look terrible on TV and we will look classy.
>
>Crowd Building: Please spread the word to every like minded person you
>know. Power in numbers.
>
>Location: The designated protest area is Shortledge Plaza-- the landscaped
>area under the new science building skybridge over what used to be
>Shortledge Road (off the corner of Eisenhower that's closer to the core of
>campus and downtown). This is a better location than it may seem, since
>we would be near the media. If you can, please arrive by 12:45. Ticket
>holders must clear metal detectors by 1:00, so we'd be the only action for
>media to cover before W arrives closer to 1:30 >2:30]. Parking may be a problem, but the first place to try is the new
>parking garage on Bigler Rd., just off of Park Ave.
>
>If any details change, we will email you corrections.
>
>Thanks, and looking very much forward to making news with you.
>
>.
>
>Bob Shepherd,
>Chair, Centre County Democrats
