Planners hope march will not get to confrontation stage

Organizers of this year’s May Day demonstration, planned for Sunday, say they don’t expect to see any violence or conflicts with police. <snip>

“Most of the organizations and individuals that have joined are advocates for nonviolence, but others are not opposed altogether to changing things through violence,” said John Svob, chairman of an umbrella group called the May Day Coalition, which includes about a dozen labor and activist organizations.

“We don’t expect any violence from our side and hope there won’t be any antagonizing or violence from the police side,” he added. <snip>

“We’ve had meetings with the organizers, then we had additional discussions with the organizers and we expect a peaceful event,” <Portland police Central Precinct Cmdr. Dave Benson> said. <snip>
