Walkers to trek 780 miles to support nuclear weapons treaty
Posted on Tue, Mar. 15, 2005
Associated Press

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Twenty-five people are walking from Tennessee to New York to promote the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, an agreement aimed to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and set for review in May.

The walk, which is to pass through New Jersey, is expected to end in Central Park on May 1, the day of the treaty's review conference at the United Nations. Walk participants want all countries to sign the treaty. <snip>

The Nonproliferation Treaty went into effect in 1970 and has been signed by 188 countries, with North Korea withdrawing in 2003. India, Pakistan and Israel have refused to sign it.

The United States has signed the treaty but is violating it, walk organizers say. U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan has said the treaty has been seriously challenged and needs to be strengthened. <snip>
