Hundreds of students and faculty rallied at Eastern Washington University Thursday, as they called on EWU President Steven Jordan to re-invite controversial speaker Ward Churchill to campus.
They want Churchill, a professor of ethnic studies at the University of Colorado, to speak about Native American activism. <snip>
Churchill says he plans to come in April, whether the school invites him or not. The university is standing by its decision.

<snip> The invitation by the Native American Student Association and the Indian Studies Program to have Ward Churchill speak on our campus during Indian Awareness Week and its subsequent cancellation by President Jordan for security concerns has caused considerable controversy on our campus and across the nation. <snip>
President Jordan has expressed, in his official statements on Feb. 4 and March 3, that he has serious security concerns regarding Ward Churchill’s appearance on campus, and that he does not feel that the university has adequate resources to address these concerns. He has also stated that, as university president, one of his key responsibilities is the safety of every individual in the campus community. <snip>
The Native American Student Association (NASA) has articulated its grave disappointment in President Jordan’s decision to cancel Ward Churchill’s appearance at EWU. They has also acknowledged that they were not represented in the decision process and that the lack of representation further alienates an already marginalized population with EWU. <snip>
We confront a momentous contemporary American issue: Are we willing to trade freedom for security? <snip>
