My grandma just met my same-sex spouse, and loved him!
I've learned my lesson: I will not age discriminate any more and assume that being old means being backward.

I have been uneasy telling my grandmother that I am gay and that I am in a committed relationship with a man. But recently she seized the initiative herself and said that she thought there was nothing at all wrong with being gay and that I should bring him over to meet her--my cousin must have told her about him, and she probably could figure I was gay anyway!

So today we visited her and brought her flowers and it was very nice. She treated him the same of the spouse or partner of any of my cousins. I think I had to challenge some age discrimination on my part. I kind of have some ingrained thinking that any older person is surely more tainted by backward thinking--and certainly someone that is 80 years old would be! But that's not the case necessarily at all!

Anyway... just had to share my experience.

5. Very cool
My mom was much more supportive of me than my sisters (who I expected to be my best allies). Over time, my very religious younger brother became my staunchest supporter. Life can be very confusing.

Kiss your grandma for me next time you see her!

2. That's very cool!
I agree, it's quite easy to assume that older will necessarily mean more conservative, and not necessarily true. Glad to hear your grandma is so cool!

3. That's great news, David
That'll teach to think bad things about your grandma. :) I actually think that when people get to be very old or close to death that they get more liberal if they weren't already that way.

4. Congratulations!
Sometimes those "old" folks can surprise us. :) One of my nephews brought home a stripper as a wife and his Grandma was just fine with it.

12. I think Grandmas understand unconditional love better
The longer you live, the more you realize that too much energy is wasted on hating and being angry.

Go Grandma!!!
