Does * come from Doonesburry?
Edited on Sat Apr-10-04 07:06 PM by Earth_First
I'm a fairly regular reader of Doonesburry, and I've noticed that the * supplement shows up with frequency here at DU, is this an adaptation from the strip?

THANKS in advance!

edit: spelling

1. Nope.

One of the SCOTUS justices said that * would forever have an asterisk by his name is history because of the controversy surrounding his non-election.

On edit: I use * because that lying piece of traitorous filth is not worthy to have his name spoken by the likes of me. O8)

2. yes
and there is also "Bush*" which somebody explained as a sign meaning that bushie will be a mere footnote in history, and his name will always have to have an asterisk to indicate the bottom of the page where i will be explained that he was not really ever president, just a criminal mistake the US will one day repudiate.

3. Various sources, from what I gather.
I guess it was a bit of an organic growth on DU.

Yes, Bush* is represented in Donnesbury by an asterisk. Yes, there was the SCOTUS dissent. And yes, Bush* is an asshole; and Kurt Vonnegut drew assholes in "Breakfast of Champions" like this: *

As far as I'm concerned, Bush is simply no more than: *

4. Bush isn't a *, he's invisible.
Trudeau started drawing Bush Sr. like that in (I think) the late 80s. It was a joke about the image of Poppy as an empty suit whom nobody ever noticed next to Ronald Reagan. Since drawing completely invisible characters doesn't really work that well, GBT drew a little sunburst shape where Bush's mouth would be, so you could see where his speech balloons are coming from. Sometimes it was necessary to draw Bush's clothes for sight gags; when he hosted a barbecue/press conference, you'd see an apron and chef's hat floating in midair.

Every member of the Bush family to "appear" in Doonesbury has been drawn the same way. Dubya has always been drawn wearing a hat (probably to distinguish him from H-Dubya). Originally it was a big dimestore cowboy hat, but lately it's been a Roman centurion's helmet.

5. yes and no
Someone On DU mentioned that an astrisk would follow
bush's name in the history books to explain the election
fiasco undermining of the Constitution etc....

It showed up in Doonesbury cartoon's as "all hat no cattle"
