Poll question: The Best Phillip K Dick Book
I know there are so many so I'll leave an "other" clause

So in light of my new name, here is the PKD poll!

5. Of course if I had room I would have put "Timothy Archer" on the list
Not sci-fi at all, but one of his most moving books. Also the last published work of his life...

8. A Scanner Darkly gets my vote but just barely
Huge fan of PKD here. :)

We Can Build You is another great one. I swear that when I first learned about Ann Coulter I immediately associated her with a character from from that novel. Pris, to be exact.

Be sure to get and read "Philip K. Dick Is Dead, Alas" by Michael Bishop.

I strongly suspect Phil had tapped into ...... something and that is what made his work so special. Ferris F. Fremont is constantly reincarnating or his spirit just endlessly roams the earth because I sense his presence in the White House.

Trivia: Phil was indeed on Nixon's enemies list.

9. Legend (and Valis) has it that he spoke with God
That God spoke to him by sending a pink light through his eye which then caused his inner soul to awaken when seeing a fish sign.

And what's funny, is I really believe it...

10. The Man in the High Castle
Didn't Phil write that novel by casting yarrow stalks (The I Ching) at each juncture or was that just the character in the novel? IIRC it was both.

I knew about the pink light ........ what gets me from The Valis Trilogy is the concept of those early christians existing outside time. It's hard to explain how that resonates with me.

I starting reading Phil's stuff almost 35 years ago so my memory is iffy on books I haven't reread lately.

18. MUST READ for PKDers: "Religious Experience of PKD", linked here:
by none other than Robert Crumb:

http://www.philipkdickfans.com/weirdo.htm

It's graphic-intensive. (Crumb, after all, is a cartoonist.) But well worth it.

11. Personally, I think A Maze of Death was his best
It's always been my favorite. I'd put Eye in the Sky and Ubik pretty close too.

12. I voted for Ubik but wanted to give Scanner Darkly fans some news
It's going into production with Rick Linklater directing and (hold your nose) Keanu Reeves in the lead role. I think Keanu Reeves couldn't act to save his life, but obviously he draws crowds. I guess they thought it was another hidden identity type of film and Reeves would just play Neo again. Anyway some interesting developments especially the animation style.

The book is a great read.

Here's a link on the movie:

Linklater's Scanner Darkly To Be Animated Like Waking Life

15. As the mommy of someone named Philip
Edited on Fri Apr-09-04 08:13 PM by SarahBelle
And in a Philip K. Dick friendly household, I've got to say, Philip is usually one "l", not two. It can be two, but I know in the case of Mr Dick, it's just one.

Okay, end of blatant annoying pettiness. :D
