I'm begging and pleading. PLEASE help me find someone to adopt Basil!
Edited on Fri Apr-09-04 08:43 AM by WillBowden
We went to the shelter last weekend. There was this dog there. They call him Basil (I would have called him Barney myself...) and I just LOVE this dog. Basil is a male Beagle/Labrador Retriever mix puppy who is eight weeks old and full of energy. He is very friendly, loves children, and loves to play.

I'm begging you guys to help me find someone who is trustworthy and would give him a good home. I want to make sure that he is happy with one family for his whole life.

This is a picture of him:

5. He's such a strange little puppy...
I went out to play with the dogs in the enclosure. I opened the gate and he ran out of it. I was so afraid that he was gone and I'd have to try and catch him. He ran to the middle of the yard and came straight back to play. It took me a while to get him back in the pen but he never left the yard.

I went in and asked about him and they told me that he can be taken into the yard and played with and just stays and plays. No leash. There's quite a few dogs up there right now but this one makes my heart ache. He just has to have a good home.

8. I want to bring him home so bad...
But we live in a 600 square foot house. 2 dogs, 4 cats and one rabbit. It wouldn't be fair to a puppy.

But it also hurts me to think that he might get put somewhere he won't be happy.

The only time this has ever happened to me before is with Misty. I love all my other kids, don't get me wrong. Basil (Barney) just messed with my head and my heart.

3. What a cutie
What city is he in? I've already taken a "DU" dog and I don't have room for more unfortunately. If I could get more details about him I'll send off an email to my buddy lists though.

9. Do they
put down their animals after so much time? I am asking because if it comes down to that some of us would probably send in some money to try to support him until he is adopted. After all you have done for all these animals it would be the least we could do for you seeing how much he means to you. If I didn't already have 13 animals I would take him in a heartbeat.

10. No, they won't put him down...
I just want to make sure he's in a GOOD and loving home with someone I can have some confidence in. That, of course, brings me to DU.

11. Too far away from me
And I can't provide a good home for a puppy. I live alone and work full time. I'm considering adopting an older dog at some point, but a puppy, especially one that's part Labrador, needs more attention than I can give.

12. The sad reality is
there are thousands and thousands more adorable animals just like Basil in animal shelters around the country than can possibly be adopted.

I used to do volunteer work at Wayside Waifs here in Kansas City and after a while you just have to get used to knowing that healthy, adoptable animals will be put down because not all of them will be adopted out.

And for those of you who start extolling the virtues of "no-kill" shelters, understand that those shelters are very limited in the number of animals they can take in, and often simply outsource their killing.

The problem is that people are irresponsible and don't neuter there animals. There have been occasional threads here where someone is wondering if he/she should neuter a newly acquired pet. The answer, unless you plan to breed, is always YES. Or people don't understand the obligations involved in owning a pet (especially some dog breeds that require a lot of attention) or move and cannot for some reason bring the pet to the new place. Or, saddest of all, die and there's no one to take in the surviving pet.

Good luck. Basil looks wonderful.

13. Yes, I'm aware...
I held a dog, not my own, that died in my arms because he was old and couldn't go on and his family ended his life with an injection instead of letting him suffer. They were an older couple who couldn't bear to be in the room when it happened.

I know about a family who took their dog into the shelter because they couldn't control it. They had no time to train it and it had become dangerous to others and it had to be put down.

I've begged and pleaded for people not to let their animals outside when they're not fixed and had people laugh at me like it wouldn't be any big deal. This is especially true of people with males. It's not THEIR problem if someone else has a cat or dog that gets pregnant.

So yes, I understand about all the animals that are out there that need help and love. Believe me.

I also realize that I would probably fall in love with many of them if I were to meet them. I did, however, meet Basil and, for me, it's important that I try to help him.
