1. It's a campy scream is what it is.
Wait until you see Patty Duke snatch Susan Hayward's wig off her head and flush it down the toilet.

2. Patty Duke is so young in this movie.
Could she really sing, is that her voice?

3. According to Wikipedia, Gail Heideman did Patty Duke's vocals.
Have you ever seen her sitcom? She's even younger in that.

29. I remember how racey that was supposed to be...
Patty Duke's drunken scene... "Boobies! Boobies! Boobies!"

Been a long time. Risqué in its day.

20. I remember when it came out
Edited on Fri Dec-02-11 11:18 PM by Art_from_Ark
My friend's older sisters were all buzzing about it. There's no way I would have been able to see it in those days, though-- my mother thought that even The Graduate was a little too risqué for my tender eyes and ears.

28. I'll have to watch it when I get a chance
That, and Easy Rider, which was another controversial (in the day) movie with "mature content" that I still have not seen.
I wasn't even allowed to watch "Bonnie and Clyde" back then, although I finally was able to watch it recently (in an airplane, of all places).

5. It is a masterpiece...
...of awfulness!! Valley of the Dolls is the standard-bearer in the genre of so-bad-it's-good films. Once you've heard Susan Hayward sing "I'll Plant My Own Tree" you'll be scarred for life.

Here is the German poster for the film:

11. The novel was a stinker also. Only sold because of rather
racy content.

9. A camp classic. Incredibly overwrought and unintentionally hysterical
Edited on Fri Dec-02-11 04:07 PM by hifiguy
A film critic, perhaps Elvis Mitchell IIRC, once described reading a Jacqueline Susann book (or watching a movie made from one of her books) as "something terrible and fascinating, like watching a drunk trying to disarm a bomb." I can't top that.

The only way it could have been even more ridiculous would have been having Russ Meyer as the director, but then he did "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls" which is an even bigger scream.

one of the worst movies I'd ever seen.

MST3K riffed better movies than this.

12. Mrs. Millers album was better fare.
She was a lady with questionable singing talent who produced her own record album. It was popular as hell.

And being reminded about her horrifying encounter with the Manson Family.

26. Beyond the Valley of the Dolls was a much, MUCH better film
Edited on Fri Dec-02-11 11:23 PM by MicaelS
For 2 reasons:
(Actually it was 4 reasons) :bounce:  :hide:

(1) The script was written by Big Bust Film Director Russ Meyer and ROGER EBERT.

(2) It starred December 1968 Playboy Playmate Cynthia Myer, she of the "legendary" 39DD breasts. Her Playmate pictures were shot in June 1968 when she was 17 years old, but it was Playboy's policy by that time to wait until a Playmate turned 18 before her pictures would be published.

The film also starred May 1966 Playboy Playmate Dolly Read who went on the marry comedian Dick Martin of Rowan and Martin's Laugh In.
