Colm Meany and The Swede are pretty interesting characters.

1. Yes! I was wondering why nobody had mentioned it
So far so good. I actually like it better than The Walking Dead nowadays.

It's like Deadwood To Go.

2. I'm pretty caught on The Walking Dead -- H o W hasn't REALLY hooked me yet.

And I think it'll be a LONG time before a Western can be equated... or
even compared (without dropping THUD) to Deadwood.
.
The Swede reminds me of an evil Doc Holliday as played by Val Kilmer --
he's got that sweaty pallor of ill health.

3. Well of course it's AMC so the language can't even come close to Deadwood
I've started to watch Justified (on FX), a show I remember seeing previews for way back and then forgot about, turns out it's been out for 2 seasons now, going on a 3rd, lol.

The episode I watched the other day centered mostly on these two guys. It was like ol' times (without the swearing. And Swearengen.

4. I watched the first episode
and then missed every other one so far.

I liked what I saw - I'll pile up the episodes and revisit it.

6. there's only been one other episode so far
Tomorrow will be the 3rd.

The first few episodes are needed to bring the characters' relationships, personal motivations and character developments and plot into play. That's why the second seasons are usually much better.

7. That's ALMOST always true of any genre of show -- "Deadwood" and "The Shield"...
.
.
.
... were two very notable exceptions. The very first episodes were DYNAMITE and
the first taste of very serious addictions.

5. I watched the first episode
I thought it was trying too hard. I haven't watched any additional episodes.

Same goes for American Horror Story.

It's like there's this fresh crop of shows trying to be all edgy and dangerous because they think that's some sort of working formula.

8. Me! Me! I'm pretty much enjoying it.
Enough to stick. Deadwood set such a high bar that it's hard not to wish for more, but they seem to be working toward an interesting set of plots and subplots. The whole idea that the West began to irrevocably change with the coming of the railroad is a really good one. And the juxtaposition with the emancipation and the negotiation of relationships between the ex slaves and the workers is good fodder. I wonder if they'll reach the Chinese workers.
